I figured it would be nice to get a thread up for questions and comments that people may think don't deserve their own thread.

  • What are you reading?
  • What did you recently read that was good?
  • What did you recently read that was bad?
  • Do you have recommendations?

I just got done with Walking Dead (I know) and I couldn't help but enjoy the preview of Murder Falcon in the back of an issue. It's a story about a guy who gets the power to summon a giant muscly falcon with the power of playing metal. It's surprisingly heartfelt and bittersweet and it only runs for 8 issues so you can knock it out in a day if you really want to.

I also really like the new Ultimate Spider-Man stuff they're doing. It's nice to see Peter happy but I can't shake the feeling that they're gonna ruin his life very soon. Honestly I'm happy when Marble does anything that isn't the same thing they've been doing for 30 years. Check out Ultimate X-Men as well if you like capeshit type stuff.

i mostly have been keeping up with the end of Krakoa, its sucks sadly i know they had to rush it since marvel cut their time to end the era from 1 year to 6 months duggan is not very good, thankfully it will all be over soon and gail simone will write uncanny x-men

i really liked ultimate x-men 1 i like how mutants seems to be more supernatural, i have not really read much about the new ultimate universe. i also like the current birds of prey run

the new ultimate stuff is a soft reboot after the old ultimate stuff. they have the maker essentially fuck everything up and make it so a lot of metahumans aren't created. i might give birds of prey a shot, i haven't read a lot of DC stuff recently. i did see that there is a DC affiliated manga in which the joker raises a baby batman and that's pretty fun

I reread "The Overcoat" by Gogol recently, now I'm trying to get into Bartleby the Scrivener after I heard it's basically the American version of The Overcoat. Both are about nobody bureaucrats, which is cool

Berserk is the only one I've really read. I have a terrible attention span. I dont really watch anime unless I'm with friends, but I've come a long way from being an "ewww anime and manga" guy in school. My buddy recommended Berserk and there arent a lot of great anime adaptations so I started reading it and I just got hooked. It has literally all the trigger warnings, reader discretion advised, but it has a lot to say about friendship and what you should fight for

Not reading that much right now, I tend to start stuff, lose attention, and eventually finish it months later. A couple things 'in progress', I might add more later:

Sera and the Royal Stars (good art, good character design, generic writing), One Star Squadron (good art, good writing), Star Trek: Aliens (ok art, pretty good writing so far, has stories focusing on Klingon/Ferengi/Trill, not sure if it's canon, in reviews they say the Trill story is great), original X-Men by Lee and Kirby (good art for the time I guess. Neil Adams also did a bit of art for it towards the end before it got cancelled, writing is somewhat simplistic, standard stuff for the time, I'm checking it out mainly to get some background on how it all started)

As for what I'd want to read right now: IDW Sonic, Justice League Dark (vol2 omnibus coming out soon, DC magic stuff is not bad at all, inherits a lot from the old Vertigo comics), more of the newer Hickman ultimate universe stuff, I read issue 1 of his new Spider Man and it seemed pretty good, but I think they're also all short mini series and not meant to be long ongoing series. I'm not sure how long Hickman will stay on. Maker is a good villain overall.

i just finished the boys. i fully considered stopping about halfway through and then i thought about the time i spent reading it already and decided to go through with it. it's engaging and keeps your attention but there were multiple points at which i was like "dude, just go write about something you like". sucks that the show went full lib because it was doing everything better than the comic

TBH I haven't read a new comic in over a year. Mainly because work's been keeping me too busy to read comics on the job. Last comic I read was a very poor adaptation of The King In Yellow. Art was nice, if a little flat, but the scripting stripped the sense of cold mechanical horror out of it, opting instead to focus on its tenuous connection to Cthulhu Mythos. Oh and they chose a completely different shape for The Yellow Sigil. 2/10

I've been meaning to read the Elric collection that came out a couple years back but I'm hesitant. I worry that the art is going to overshadow the story.

The only recommendation I'll make is the same recommendation I always make: READ 2000 AD! It's got Judge Dredd in it if you need something recognizeable to get into a comic. It's also got 3-4 other ongoing stories in it at any given time, and you're bound to find something interesting in one of them. Sub-suggestions (i.e. series from 2000 AD you might want to get into): Absalom, Brink, Brass Sun, Halo Jones

I just started reading this manga "Apple Black". It's manga from American-Nigerian kat named Odunze Oguguo and it rules. Also back on my Hellboy/BPRD readings, I love those stories. Also reading the Blade Runner 2019, I tend not to like spin-offs of existing media but these feel like good comics that just happen to be based off a thing rather than a heartless tie-in product.

I've been going through Marvel's stories from Avengers Disassembled onwards, just finished Civil War and Planet Hulk. Civil War sucks ass! Planet Hulk kicks ass! Someone should kill Tony Stark and Reed Richards.

civil war did stink a whole bunch, just an incredibly dumb story that affects literally everything in the universe
