I think another contributing factor is racism. Maybe not in this case specifically... but there have been studies that show when you inform white people that they will no longer be a majority in a few years, they get more conservative. Gen-X folks are gonna be particularly bad with this, I think. They've spent decades enjoying the benefits of white privilege and now that white supremacy is starting to crumble, they're getting more reactionary. Even if they're not even fully conscious of it themselves, they don't like POCs demanding equality. They rationalize it as being against "cultural marxism" or "SJWs", but the simple truth is they're used be being in a position of power and supremacy just because of their whiteness, and they can't handle taking that away.

It has nothing to do with generation though. Zoomers are just as racist as Xers/Boomers provided that you control for race.
Literally the ONLY reason young people are left is because young people are less white (due to immigration after the 1965 act).
If you only look at whites it's like watching a coelocanth or a ginkgo tree, literally nothing at all has changed over a 50 year generational span.
I'm remembering these stats from about 2 years ago, but the difference between white genZers and white Boomers was a 2% reduction in identifying as conservative. So it doesn't seem like the property ownership matters all that much in practice.
Actually I'm gonna try to find the source and post it
Can't help but wonder how many of those white zoomers are expecting to inherit even a modest amount of property, and therefore identify as such despite not currently owning any.
IMO the problem is that you need a special personality to become anti-establishment in the first place.
Some people are just contrarians and enjoy pissing people off. These don't really have any allegiance at all to the movement and can turn on a dime. Think about what political movements were alive in the 70s/80s, and basically the only thing these gen Xers could rebel against was right wing politics (aesthetically ofc, they never actually DID anything).
Some people are independent/critical thinkers and arrive at the correct conclusion. (I know it sounds cringe Iamverysmart w/e)
Also, anti-establishment means different things in different places. Anti-establishment in the US =/= anti-establishment in China, because globally the US literally IS the establishment.
People who are capable of recognizing reality, and who are comfortable with ambiguity until doing their own research, and doing said research in a relatively unbiased way, are IMO an extremely small subset of the population. Maybe 5%, idk
Also aging does things to the brain. I think that most men are logical vegetables after the age of 50 or so. Also people are aging faster than they used to.
This is a huge determining factor, IMO. If someone can't mature past that they transition to reactionary nitwit. How can we normalize getting comfortable with being uncomfortable?
How can we normalize getting comfortable with being uncomfortable?
IMO you can't. I suspect that Ambiguity is a resource intensive mental state. It takes more energy to think "X could be 4, or 6" than to think "X is 2"
Likewise it takes more energy to give people the benefit of the doubt (ambiguity) than assume things that have no basis in reality.

It's also why the medical system is fucked
