    I believe that human beings, like most animals, aren't adapted to having food available to them 24/7. There is data that suggests that periods of fasting encourage a process called autophagy, where your body breaks down tissue for energy. Our bodies are pretty efficient, and will usually prioritize older and inefficient cells for recycling. Of course you can overdo this and lose muscle tissue, and really overdo it and your osteoclasts will start to break down your bones because your muscles can't work without calcium. I think a little fasting is beneficial, so long as it doesn't develop into disordered eating patterns.
