Worried I’ll lose a lot of energy though.

Edit: should’ve written that I meant “intermittent fasting”

    crash dieting is bad.

in the US get a referral to a dietician (not a nutritionist) if you want to fuck with your food intake. if you live somewhere else find out what the protected title is for professional food nerds and figure out how to talk to one of those.

"In the US, go to a doctor to get a referral to a different doctor" Lol. Not that it isn't good advice, but come on now. Obviously not the answer you want asking on the internet, and nothing any American wants to hear.

Besides, people often fast for religious or spiritual reasons

O Allah, on this day, make my fasts worthy of appreciation and acceptance, according to what pleases You. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.

I've done intermittent fasting for like 2-3 years now. You can talk to experts but my personal layman take is we are too obsessed with finding the "best" or "optimal" way of eating and exercising.

The best way to eat and workout is whatever fits in consistently with your lifestyle. Everyone is obsessed with "human beings evolved to do X" but really if anything I think we evolved to be pretty flexible.

I like doing intermittent fasting because I have a pretty hectic high speed lifestyle as a single dad. Being able to cut breakfast and lunch out of my day nets me more hours. Wake up and sign into work early, drop kiddo off at school, get a workout in instead of lunch, and then when I clock out for the day and grab kiddo I can basically eat as much as I feel like at dinner without fretting too seriously over calories.

That said: sometimes if it's the middle of the day and I'm feeling super lethargic and unable to focus I'll go and make and scarf down a pb&j real quick.

Might be confirmation bias, but this is sorta the answer m I was looking for. I’ll clarify that I mean “intermittent fasting” in the post. Kind of just want more control of my intake as I’ve been feeling pretty unhealthy lately.

After doing some more reading, thinking of going 16:8 to start and then heading to 18:6 if it’s working. Sounds like you didn’t necessarily adhere to hours though huh?

i don't eat between 4PMish and 6AM the next day, at first it felt horrible, the hunger and lethargy; but after a few weeks my body got used to it. It also helped that I sleep through most of it.

Went from 90kg in June when I started to 83kg. You will see huge drops in the first 1-1.5 months after which the weight loss plateaus as your body adjusts to the diet. I think I'm still losing weight but at a much slower rate.

You are always going to feel less energetic to some degree when cutting calories, that's just how your body works.

Lots of people have success doing IF, I'm cutting now and I kind of fell into a semi-IF eating schedule (at least on weekdays). I've been consuming about 500 calories each day from 7AM - 5PM and then I get the rest in between then and bedtime. It's been working for me thus far, but you will still have to employ other strategies because most people can easily put away 1500 calories in a couple of hours without thinking about it.

Can you explain IF? I only eat one meal a day most of the time - is that intermittent fasting or is there a set schedule?

It just means you eat all of your calories within a small time range instead of spread through the entire day. I'm sure one meal counts as long as you're not also like, snacking 6 hours before and after.

Coffee with creamer and sugar, Oatmeal (the added protein kinds), and a protein bar usually. I try to stick to things with high protein and/or fiber as I find them to be the most satiating. I drink a ton of water during this time as well.

Fruit is usually my go-to for a satiating snack, particularly any kind of melon and unsweetened apple sauce.

I don't think you should fast unless it's part of a religious observance or a hunger strike. It's good to give your body fuel and nutrients regularly, you should probably just keep doing that.

I have attempted to lose weight before but I'm not now. I reject the idea that weight cannot be lost in a healthy way and that to be successful one must adopt unhealthy practices

Are you asking because you want advice, or are your asking because you think what I've done in the past is somehow relevant to whether people should starve themselves

A bit of both I guess. I think if you are against IF as a method for health reasons, then sure, but you should suggest a better alternative if you wanna be at all constructive. And if you said some shit like "I ran 20 miles a day. Anyone can lose weight without calorie control tricks" it would massively discredit your original point

I just saw the edit from OP - I have no problem with people using intermittent fasting I'm not even sure that's unhealthy honestly. I thought we were talking about just not eating for like, days.

But if you're actually asking for advice on how I lost weight most people will tell you you can't really do it by burning calories (though it can help it's pretty marginal). I counted calories, which meant very strict with treats. Lots of fruit, vegetables and nuts. Smoothies as meal replacements regularly. Popcorn as a treat when I needed one. Allowed one ridiculous treat a week (like a cinnamon bun or something). Reduced alcohol consumption pretty significantly. I did run, more every week. Eventually I did work towards about a 15km run about once a week, which worked out to be almost one day's calories. I hate running but it really is the most time-efficient way to burn calories.

I think if you got up to running 15km a week I bet you "hate" running but secretly you enjoy it, a common relationship with running

Edit: because it sucks but is also very fun

I believe that human beings, like most animals, aren't adapted to having food available to them 24/7. There is data that suggests that periods of fasting encourage a process called autophagy, where your body breaks down tissue for energy. Our bodies are pretty efficient, and will usually prioritize older and inefficient cells for recycling. Of course you can overdo this and lose muscle tissue, and really overdo it and your osteoclasts will start to break down your bones because your muscles can't work without calcium. I think a little fasting is beneficial, so long as it doesn't develop into disordered eating patterns.

I've done IF. It worked pretty well, I was losing about a pound a week by just no eating breakfast basically. I would recommend it, it only takes like 3 days before you get used to not eating in the morning so the hunger pangs stop being an issue pretty quickly

It seems like "fasting" can mean lots of different things.

Maybe figure out what your daily calorie intake is, on average, and try to manage your portions to reduce overall calorie intake while still regularly eating meals. So, as a completely random internet nobody, maybe try calorie reduction instead of complete fasting. :edgeworth-shrug:

There's a weird period when fasting a few days when you may feel more energetic and no longer really miss food.

That period is dangerous. It helps to have someone around to make sure you don't try to go too long that way.

Also, even during a fast, make sure to get plenty of water and vitamins.

I've been doing intermittent fasting, haven't seen any drastic health changes either way, but I kept with it just because it simplifies meal planning only having one big meal and a few snacks after I am home (I eat in the evening and don't eat breakfast or lunch). The other thing I have noticed is, if I skip lunch, I don't have any dip in energy in the afternoon, which I do have if I haven't slept well and ate lunch. And I drink black coffee when fasting, which I think some people don't allow.

It will take a while to get used to, but at this point, I don't notice any difference in energy if I eat or don't eat, even when working out (though I do think my running pace is slightly slower). And at this point I don't really even get hungry at lunch time.
