On this day in 2019, protests and riots began throughout Chile in response to a raise in the Santiago Metro's subway fare, the increased cost of living, privatization and inequality prevalent in the country.

The protests have been called the "worst civil unrest" in Chile since the end of Augusto Pinochet's military dictatorship due to the scale of damage to public infrastructure, the number of protesters, and the measures taken by the government to put down the rebellion.

On the 25th of October, over a million people took to the streets throughout Chile to protest against President Piñera, demanding his resignation. As of December 29th, 2019, 29 people have died, nearly 2,500 have been injured, and 2,840 have been arrested.

Human rights organizations have received several reports of violations conducted against protesters by security forces, including torture, sexual abuse and sexual assault.

Chile: what was the October Rebellion, and what will come of it? We need a working-class Marxist tendency!

My girlfriend said if we end up having kids down the road she wants to move back to Texas to be close to friends and family. On the one hand, yeah, having that kind of support network would make things so much easier. But on the other, God am I really not crazy about the idea of spending the rest of my life in this fucking state.

We live in Houston now, but are planning on moving elsewhere within the next 2-3 years. I guess I had always thought and hoped that move would be permanent. I’m not from here and never planned on staying long-term.

We’re talking about something that wouldn’t happen for 5+ years. There’s so much that can change between now and then. Am I freaking out over nothing?

I think Texas will be a ground zero state for the increasingly batshit and dangerous Christian fascism that's coming. I wouldn't move to one of those states if somebody paid me quite a lot of money despite the fact I'm cheap as hell.

It already is. Child Protective Services is having a civil war because the Governor and the rest of the fascists have ordered them to hunt down and kidnap trans children. Critical support for some members of CPS, because a number of them have resigned, flat out refused, and I think there's a lawsuit going through the courts to order the Governor to back off. But others have enthusiastically leaned in to their role as the Gestapo.

I would rather die than ever set foot in Texas again for any reason. Like, if it was to rescue a loved one, or as part of an invading army, I would consider it. But that's the limit. I hate that fucking state, I hate it's culture, I hate it's climate, I hate every fucking thing about it, and I have nothing but pity for the people who are trapped there against their will.

Ask her what she'd do if one of her kids was trans and CPS broke down the door to kidnap her child.

Texas is kind of fucked in the long term with climate change and the ever increasing hot days. I don't even want to think about how bad traffic is going to be in Houston in 5+ years.
