My dad always gets really pissed with me about table manners, but for stupid ones. Making a mess of your food is one thing, but eating with a hat, having elbows on the table and eating of your knife are all terrible according to him. He has the classic boomer brainworm where he was taught something stupid growing up and never questioned it, so now he completely believes it but can't explain why.

My mum taught me not to scoop food up with a fork, unless I was only holding a fork (no knife) and I was holding it in my knife had. She would say no shovelling... Fucking wild. Anyway, we make a point of ignoring that rule just to wind her up now.

manners are a way to exclude/insult/socially relegate people based on their upbringing.
social interactions that legitimately do require caution and care are asking for diplomacy, which does not include how to hold and arrange your cutlery but instead includes thinking through the possible implications of what you're about to say.
I like a couple of mannersy things that have practical implications. Putting your knife and fork together to indicate you're done eating is good because the waiter or whoever can grab the plate and both cutlery at the same time with one hand.
Under communism (with owl characteristics) it will be considered bad manners not to shed at the table
What about swallowing whole mice into your belleh, can you not do that at the table
Manners are too big for a single small family to live in, turn them into apartment complexes for singles or small family group living.

manners are the social rules of a situation. They are necessary for a society where everyone isn't constantly at each others throats and the amicable resolution of conflict. Without manners and social rules humans wouldn't have been capable of organising even hunter gatherer societies.
some fragments of society have different rules such as the aristocracy. Those rules are only required if you wish to fit in with said aristocracy

manners is a very broad term it includes how you speak, how you dress, how you confront someone you have an issue with, how you treat guests etc
for example it is bad manners to play loud music late into the night and it is bad manners to threaten violence

sure I'm kind of a dick a lot of the time, but most of that is because I live uncomfortably in an ocean of misanthropic bigots, which is to say I live among :cracker: in the southern US
