At various times throughout the series it's stated that they're eating a Pokemon. Pokemon G&S had the plot about Team Rocket poaching Slowpoke tails, the animated series had Ash worried that Prof Oak would eat his Crabby (turns out Oak was eating Gary's much larger Crabby), etc.
Then again, the show used to have guns until somebody decided to retcon it and say that everyone in the Pokemon World settles their differences with Pokemon Battles, so :shrug-outta-hecks:
I imagine that the reason Pokemon World is so utopic is because the peasants simply Pokemon battled all the landlords at some point in the past and achieved communism.

You only think you're kidding, it's a huge plot point in Pokemon X/Y that a character's Pokemon lost their life in The War.

Idk why ghetsis never had a gun shooting a gun seems to be far quicker than throwing pokeballs
