6 euros? That's straight up robbery. Where I live anything over 2.80 is straight up robbery in my view

Yeah it is very expensive compared to most of Europe and there's no good reason for it beyond greed lol

Both Australia and New Zelaand are kind of wild in the sense that almost everyone agrees that there's a culturally-ingrained drinking problem but nobody is willing to do anything about it except raise alcohol taxes even more.

That's a big part of it but on the other hand there's also a lot of rich people who have deeply unhealthy relationships with alcohol. I think there's something deeply wrong beyond level of wealth when people somehow associate getting a haircut with having a drink.

Idk what the solution is tbh. Sharia law maybe? :inshallah:

I like shisha cafes but I'm told that serious Muslims wouldn't be caught in one

Capitalism hurts bougies too. Spiritually. Never forget it because it will be important. I've seen it personally in my frankly sad pursuit of not having a job ever

I once heard about a study that revealed that contrary to popular belief the rich drink more than the poor and have a higher incidence of problematic drinking. The reason is quite simple: The rich can afford the booze better. A poor person doesn't have the money for a couple of cocktails after work, a bottle of wine with dinner etc.

This one you could track the owner down rather easily. Not a chain pub

I wish I'd been a wine enjoyer. It didn't have to be this way

      Sarcasm is always implied btw

Interestingly home brewing is not illegal and Coopers sell kits in supermarkets. Home distilling is illegal but people do it anyway lol

How's the traffic in your city? I've heard good things about public transport in Australian cities.

That's the sort of question I love and that makes me want to get the laptop out to answer (haven't but sorely tempted). This could be 10,000 words. Not even joking

It's... not exactly Los Angeles but not exactly Paris either. I suspect Melbourne and Sydney are quite comparable to Boston (never been there). The central areas are very nice (I like the laneways in Melbourne and the "Little" streets, e.g. Lt Bourke [Chinatown]) but the outer suburbs are wastelands.

Central Sydney has merits above Central Melbourne that most brain poisoned hipsters don't notice but I do. One is that the light cycles are faster. You're not waiting for eternity to cross the wider streets. One way streets obviate this, of course. Also I'm a chaos enjoyer so I like the lack of grid and the way the harbour imposed itself on Sydney.

There is a joke I remember. Something like "to Sydney God gave everything, Man nothing. To Melbourne God gave nothing, Man everything." As with a lot of sayings there is truth within it, but don't take it literally.

I've lived in Adelaide, we ripped up a city wide tram network in the 60's, rebuild about 5% of it recently at great expense and generally have just left public transit to rot while the suburbs sprawl out in every direction. We also have a boondoggle of a bus/train thing built in the 90's, the only other one in the world being in Germany, which we can't afford new busses for, congests the hell out of the CBD and is running far beyond it's capacity.

E: Also our busses are owned by I think 4 separate companies that don't cooperate on scheduling.

The ripping up of the tram lines, many such cases! Sydney did the same. US cities too.

Melbourne's tram lines are set in concrete (largely) and I have to do some research before I recite something I only vaguely remember as fact, but this may have been on purpose.

I know an electrical engineer who worked on the trams 30 years ago. Can ask him if all other research leads nowhere.

I'd be interested to know more for sure.

I was in Melbourne recently and the trams are amazing, just hop on anywhere in the CBD and get anywhere. Decent trains too.

Trams are great. You don't have to go down an escalator to get on one and they're more "consistent" (persistent?) than buses.

More on trams in my Life's Effortpost. Peace Be Upon Trams.

Ask me anything about why Australia rules too if you like.

It doesn't, it fucking sucks, but always everything could be worse.

For instance if I walked in front of a tram the hospital would treat me without examining my wallet. You can get the dole and live in a van. Normal shit like that.

      a) How is inflation?

      b) I'm a long-time backcountry camping kinda person (opposite side of the globe) - what's it like fucking off to the boonies down there? I'm guessing canoe camping is less of a thing but there are probably some good hikes and shit.

      c) I live in a bus. What would that be like in Australia?

        A. Inflation is fine if you live hand-to-mouth. More on this another time

        B. It's good. Tasmania is good if your climate tastes are like mine. NT is good but you might (I hope!) turn into a Maoist

        C. It'd be great
