I'll warn that bg3 is likely to be baldur's gate in name only. I am a big Larian fan, but they haven't exactly made the kinds of RPG that baldur's gate is in the past. Larian's games in the past have all been goofy lighthearted things for the most part, and I think wizards of the coast wants BG3 to be more of an ad for the dnd "brand." I was a kid when BG1 came out but from what I can tell it existed in a period when the brand was more flexible, and stuff like Planescape Torment was being made at the edges of the IP.
Fair enough but OS2 was probably the most serious game Larian has made, and even then there's plenty of humor interspersed throughout its darker sections. OS1 had the vibes of a tabletop session with friends who aren't too emotionally invested, and OS2 was like when your DM decides to try something a little more involved. High school dnd vs college dnd, you know?
The art style alone is a big departure for baldur's gate, 1 and 2 had that almost-grimdark earthy aesthetic and 3 is full of bright color and snark, which isn't bad but is not at all like 1 and 2.
Hmm. Im not sure I agree with that. There are some horror movies (which I would call dark stories) that are very bleak and even humour less. Not trying to argue. Just saying you can have a dark story pretty much devoid of humour.
