It's pretty much the same as watching a twitch stream but with a cute anime character. There is some token kayfabe nods to their character's "backstory", like being a dragon or a robot or from Atlantis, but other than that there's no real difference between them and other streamers besides cuteness.
Forgive my ignorance, but what is the appeal of vtubers? Is it any different than watching a normal streamer?

The streamers themselves seem pretty innocuous. The fan culture is pretty rotten, though what could you expect when anime, games and Japan collide
Yeah, I like a lot of anime/japanese video game type stuff, I just wish the fans were less repulsive.
