I'm getting redirected to an error page. Does this mean that I'm a lib and not the one true leftist?

I fully support the idea of having a hexbear users only space, but making it dependent on having to manually ban people without a hexbear account is absolutely ridiculous. I was asked earlier today in the trash heap that's the thread about trans athletes if i wanted to mod there because my activity on this site has plummmeted due to it no longer feeling as a safe space for me as a trans person after this federation garbage. And it felt downright hurtful that the reaction to me airing my grievances about losing a site that had once felt like home and in turn getting a slightly more left-leaning version of motherfucking reddit was "hey, if being exposed to all this bigottry in your safe space wears you down and makes you visit the site less, why not become a mod and wade through the liberal shit even more?"

And no, don't give me any of this "but we still ban transphobes on sight" spiel, i know that, i appreciate your efforts, but there's fucking radlib subs on reddit that do the same and hexbear feels exactly like them now. I love your modding policy, but what made this site feel like home wasn't only that, it was having a userbase that, by virtue of several long-lasting purges, was in its entirity either trans itself or trans inclusive enough to not make moderation necessary most of the time. That isn't the case anymore, and unless we do something a thousand times less of a band aid than this, it will never be the case ever again. This site is overrun with liberal bazinga brained anti-communist cishet dudes full of reactionary garbage takes, and all you admins care about is how many fash-adjacent freeze peach subs full of wehrmacht apologists we can federate with next to engage in productive discourse in the marketplace of ideas with, like how the fuck has this site voted in favor of federating / staying federated with lemm.pee and sh.it.is.shit or however that dumpster fire is called?

Seriously WHAT THE FUCK has gotten into your heads that you've ruined this place like that? My front page is nothing but facebook memes, liberal cringe and a few hexbear threads overrun wih transphobia. How has that happened?

But congratulations on how many new users you're onboarding, i'm sure that will not further redditify site culture.

Seriously, i'm pissed. If things continue like this, if you do not provide an actual solution, i will leave this place at some point, and that point isn't that far off anymore. That will mean that i spend even more time in trans-only communities full of radlibs and it will over time deradicalize me more and more, but that's to be expected when you demonstrate so clearly that people like me just aren't numerous enough to be worth your efforts and care in the long run. That you will simply turn this into another brofest, like a bigger and more active lemmygrad.ml that is not chronically dorky and unfunny. If you do not care about maintaining what hexbear used to be, if you ditch that in favor of this, then this is no longer a place for me. I'm saying this as somebody who was active on the old sub, who was on the discord liferaft, who made her first account here on day two, who made this account, the first one i've set to my real promouns, when you overhauled the site. There is no fun in this anymore. You no longer feel like the comrades of mine who looked out for me and helped me through some of the most precarious parts of coming out as trans, made me stop using ableist language and turned me vegan, you now come off as a bunch of techbros who only care about your KPIs. Well here's a number to crunch for you, your count of daily active users may soon be one long time comrade shorter.

I hope you're happy with your decisions. Enjoy your brocialist edgelord reddit, because that's what this will turn into when you continue down this path.

Try swapping your default sort to "top 12 hours" or "top 6 hours." The default active sort prioritizes exclusively two-day-old flame wars with lost redditors, and the hexbears are online enough that you'll get good discussions already in top 6.

But this is just a mitigation strategy for what I agree is a misguided set of priorities that are ruining this community.

I know that's better, and that anything but sorting by "local" is worthless anyway, but is there any way to set these as the default permanently? They switch back every time i get into a thread.

They're "Type" and "Sort type" in your settings page. I don't think there's a default sort ordering for within threads.

It’s aggravating honestly. I never understood the “it’ll let us dunk on libs, live in real time!” argument. Hell yeah, you can get into more internet slapfights, cool, I’m sure compromising the comfort and the welcoming atmosphere for LGBT+ ppl so you can own the libs is a good trade. It’s cool to give lemmy shitheads the opportunity to come in and say vile things to our comrades - we already had that happen occasionally but wouldn’t it be cooler if we invite 100x more to do so?

Appealing to liberals has led to them kicking us in the ass and evicting us from our own spaces faster than the scummiest landlord on earth, it’s how it ends every single time, and we still try it again and again and again. But I guess we must sacrifice any semblance of ideological coherence for the sake of growth.

It takes two fucking minutes to make another account on another forum to get into pointless arguments with liberals.

Hope it was worth it to destroy the site culture to get a few cheap laughs in.

And for everyone who insisted that Hexbear would somehow be a “revolutionary vanguard” that would spread communism to the rest of lemmy, I want to thank you for providing me with the dumbest, most awe-inspiringly idiotic take I have ever read in my entire life. It would’ve been funny if the site wasn’t immediately inundated with liberals and their fascist friends.

For all the lecturing I got for my “overreaction”, federation sure has turned out exactly the way I expected it to.

      Congratulations, we’ve made Reddit 2.

It really sucks to have to rediscover the chapo method again, and fully understand why it developed.

This is why I was against federation, and I am not in (as far as any of you know) any marginalized groups. This shit is just boring and sucks.

I agree, defederate from every instance except lemmygrad, and begin a great purge

or we can purge rn. They're doing it to us for bullshit reasons, im fine with being disingenuous to these worthless bastards

The downside of that is that we're running the risk of splitting our userbase, and that this would particularly drain hexbear main instance of queer, racialized and neurodiverse comrades not feeling safe among all the liberal chauvinists. So hexbear would have an even stronger tendency to become a lot more straight, white and neurotypical, and i think that would be a massive loss.

And when you're on the den instance and set sorting to all, you do not get the den and "regular" hexbear, you get all of the lemmyverse. That's not how i would want my filter toggles to work. I hope it's ok when i just copy-paste some of my general musings i just sent to one of our beautiful mods here. It's from a private conversation, but it leaves out all the parts that are private, it's just my ideas that i would like to share here:

I don't know if making a seperate instance is the way forward, that would probably split the community and make a lot of vulnerable comrades leave entirely for the den, which would change site culture even more. That's absolutely a point worth considering. I know that full defederation is not an option the site as a whole would accept, either. And i get the usefulness of being federated for agitational and educational purposes, we can actually make an impact on the fediverse and spread our beliefs effectively, and while that should not lead to the dismissal of the concerns of users like me, i cannot dismiss the importance of that entirely, either. We can do more on lemmy than to just dunk on libs, i've seen on the old sub what our way to propagate leftism can do to radicalize people. That place turned me from a ContraPoints radlib into a Lenin reader. I want others to have the same experience. Many others. Doing stuff like that is the only way to save this world and we both know that .

So how do i synthesize these disparate feelings of my community's strong need for a safe space and our larger movement's need for agitation combined with the very real need to not do the average dumb baby leftist thing and split the party?

My take on this is that offering fully localized comms is the way forward. These should particularly include comms for LGBTQIA+ users, for PoC and other racialized groups, for our neurodiverse comrades and those living with disability, as these three groups are very obviously hit the hardest by the downsides of federation. But i also want a powerful trans meme sub that makes it to the front of All. Gotta keep those eggs cracking, y know? We need to watch out for our vulnerable members, but we need to spread the word and confront the libs with their unquestioned queerphobia, ableism and racist national chauvinism. Most importantly: We need to keep all of our users on one instance, but give them the option how far they want to stick their neck out of the safe space, and to adjust that easily whenever they want to. That means effective and low-effort ways to (omg please bear with me for the marketing talk) customize your user experience, which should not only include backend changes, but also fall into the realm of communicating the use of the site's features, such as making regular announcements how to permanently set your sorting to "local", which does a lot to de-reddify what the site feels like. Comrade Owl told me about this yesterday and setting my sorting to local has already changed so much, more people should be aware of that. I also think that strictly containing dunk threads is a necessity, and that moderation should watch out that these are CW'ed accordingly, i see a ton of screencaps with awfully transphobic or racist shit not NSFW'ed and labeled correctly.

There are some technical solutions that need to be taken, but this is also an issue of moderation policy and comucating with the users.

Hi, I’m new here, but this post will stick with me for a while. Don’t know what Hexbear was like before but I’ve noticed this with the activism groups I used to be a part of and it sucked. Ur not alone on feeling like this. Trying to achieve growth over all else is a cancer.

        C'mon, you know why.

        Nope, I don't, that's why I asked blob-no-thoughts

I'm not against.it either. Didn't know ppl requested it, so was unexpected and there being no context but " hexbear only thing here" made me wonder why. I get it now tho. Fwiw I only hang around the mega and that's pretty hexbear-only in practice, so I don't have the experience others have with federation.

Cuz I didn't know there were people who requested it. I only browse local, and frankly mostly stick around the mega.

Could've just said "users want a hexbear only environment to avoid conflict and enjoy a relaxed, more original hexbear vibe" , as I now understand to be the reasoning. Don't see the reason for this kinda response

To kneel like a knight before the cross. This was hyperbole. In rhetoric, an obvious exaggeration; an extravagant statement or assertion not intended to be understood literally.

It was used to express my frustration with the social interaction I had higher up in this comment chain, as I feel like people were unfavourably interpreting my comment, disproportionally so since it was a single word. To insinuate a need to grovel before such a simple, limited in size, comment is hyperbole.

In actuality it was a miscommunication which happens, whatever. And I'm autistic so I read into these things too much trying to understand em.

No worries, I've noticed I tend to interpret things online negatively at first glance too — genuinely think it's something that'd change if there was a more cooperative, inclusive attitude in society, and was conditioned into me by r e d d i t.
