This cold war 2 mongering shit actually scares me. What the fuck is wrong with the west? We are dealing with a pandemic, economic collapse and environmental decline now is not the time to be picking fights with a superpower.

It's such an obvious ploy to distract people from domestic problems, how do people fall for this shit?

It's a perfect tactic - find a potentially ethically questionable thing China is doing, inflate it into a genocide, and therefore automatically paint anyone who questions it (or the US's motives) as a genocide denier. Uyghur discourse on the mainstream internet is basically a trap.

It is because they are terrified.
China exists as a shining beacon, saying communism is possible you guys!

In a time like this, hope for after the revolution will not stand.

I was being hyperbolic. But the relevant point is, China "is better than the US for sure", it doesn't matter that it isn't quite paradise, it isn't hell.
Knowing that could be enough to encourage even ordinary people to join the revolution. The USA works extremely hard to make China seem like just a different type of hell.

The histories of post-collapse USSR, East Germany, Yugoslavia, these are terrifying; but China is an example that, once revolution has happened, long term stability is possible.

The Western world does not care for '"communism", it is a scare word; but something like a state capitalism, dictatorship of the proletariat, that doesn't go to war all the time...
It is something "realistic" that people can easily imagine. If everybody knew the realities about China, it would be much more difficult for the bourgeois to retain control.

Especially now that the USA economy is under such extreme stress, and seeing how a pandemic is allowed to just run its course, people have less to lose.
But most still expect that if a revolution comes, they will enter just another nightmare, one that is likely worse.

They’re not terrified because China poses an ideological threat. They’re terrified because it doesn’t. It was very easy to convince Western European governments to line up against the USSR because it posed a serious ideological threat to their ruling classes. But China will do business with anyone regardless of what kind of government you have. They’re not interested in domestic politics in any country beyond getting along and having a productive trade relationship. The US ruling class and their mandarins are used to calling the shots in the “free world” but China gives other countries’ rulers another option for patronage that doesn’t have many strings attached.

The defense establishment is doing it to preserve their jobs. It was easy to fundraise against the USSR because it was big and had nukes. Between the collapse of the USSR and 9/11 they were rudderless, some thinking they could reform the military into some kind of humanitarian force with bombs. Then 9/11 happened and they had another Big Bad in Islamic terrorism but now China is big and good at science and building shit they have a better adversary than some religious nut jobs in a cave somewhere.
