I know it's a dumb kids anime, but god damn it's so entertaining. I just got caught up to episode 953 (took me a whole year lmao) and now I'm watching the first season again on Netflix. That season one intro makes me so nostalgic I could cry!!
The character designs of Oda are really unparalleled and the early seasons are actually funny as hell. As far as messaging goes, I think the show is kinda confused because in one arc they'll be helping to restore a monarchy, then the next, aiding revolutionary fighters. Generally the crew seems pretty anarchistic tho in their fuck the Navy attitude and how everyone on board has a say.
The Wano arc is exciting and I wonder where it will go to next, Raftel maybe?? I'd like to see the straw hats interact with Shanks and his crew finally. What do you guys think?
the one piece is communism
edit: like, it actually probably will be something along the lines of the communist manifesto.
A huge inspiration for oda was toriyama (goku = the monkey in monkey d. luffy), who is unintentionally anarchist in almost all of dragon ball (goku being a person that can't see race, gender, class, etc., and who entirely fights archists (emperor pilaf, general red, king piccolo, prince vegeta, king frieza, Cell, who has a king motif, and Buu, who has a sultan motif)). idk where i waqs going wit this sry
This is a scalding take comrade. I've been trying to sus out what Oda's politics are, but to no avail. Luffy doesnt really seem to have a coherent ideology other than "I'm gonna be king of the pirates", but the way he operates is very comrade-like. Nami is a capitalist for sure. The rest of the crew are anyone's guess
Eh, whenever Nami talks about money, she's not talking about money. Ex) she cries about the billion berries they didn't get from Alabasta, because that's what it would have taken for her to wholly accept Vivi being gone without sadness. Arlong made it impossible for her to not interpret the world through money
Gonna talk about the Nefertari's real quick cus them and the Ancient "Kingdom" are the key to understanding Oda dumbing this shit down for kids, imo. The Nefertari's themselves being one of the 20 monarchs that opposed the Ancient Kingdom, although unlike all the other world nobles, they peaced out immediately, and hid one of the Ancient Weapons from them. Either way, Vivi and Cobra both literally describe a 'kingdom' as a people, which imo is there to show us that the Ancient Kingdom wasn't a monarchy like the World Government, but a at least a country with liberal democracy.
Spoilers if you're not caught up with Wano
Talking Gol D. Roger finding the One Piece and learning about Joy Boy and the real history, but being unable to do anything about the World Government. The void century, One Piece, and the World Government are thus linked entirely. So we know that the Ancient Kingdom was opposed by actual kings, who allied in order to defeat and erase their entire existence from history. They were that scared of something they knew or believed, because it's not like they did the same for the Ancient Weapons that could like actually destroy the world.
When Roger discovers the One Piece, he realizes he can't do shit, because he's dying of cancer, which afaik was established in Sabaody. If the One Piece is anything but history (and imo it's something along the lines of the communist manifesto in that it's entirely ideological), then a dying Roger could have done legit anything, but instead he lets himself get caught and executed*, so he could tell others to find it and inherit his and the ancient commies will.
i can go on forever with this pepe silvia shit, there's like a thousand fking chapters
- just jerking off oda real quick and loving how they stopped executing high profile pirates after this (fking even arlong is in impel down), and when they bring back the death penalty for ace, it fucking blows up in their face again. like that's some good wordless worldbuilding right there
I've never been a manga guy but now that I've watched all the anime, maybe I will start so I can see what happens next
DBZ was king back in the day, tho I prefer Dragon Ball because it had better animation/humor imo
Nah it's all good! Any anime talk is better than none to me haha. Agree with you on that though. Once every character besides Goku became weak asf, the series lost me. So many good side characters that never got any chance to shine. Tien, Yamucha, Chaozu, etc
That's true. The androids were sort of boring for me, though I loved the saiyaman arc, which everyone else seems to hate. I think it's the slice of life-high school aspect of it that's really fun to me. Majin boo was somewhat entertaining, but by then you could tell the series was teetering off and the writing wasn't as good. Frieza is a great villain though, I have to agree with you there
I've always been daunted by the sheer length but it looks like a lot of fun. Maybe I'll get around to the manga someday
Yeah the length puts a lot of people off I'm sure. There is a good fan edit called One Pace which excises a lot of the filler and puts like 2 or 3 episodes into 30 minutes.
Don't do this, just read the colored manga on mangadex. OnePace removes the good filler and has jarring af edits
What G-8 is baller and all the added interactions pre-timeskip are dope.
I really hope after the manga is finished they do a remake with better animation, no filler, and better pacing.
yessss for this and every weekly shonen pls. dbz kai had problems, but fuck, at least it's watchable
still simping for the manga tho and G-8. and goat island has some nice robin scenes, too. Like yea it's made to pad it out, but considering part 1 is like 2 months long in terms of how much time passed, padding that out and adding scenes to digest what just happened is <3<3
Hard agree. like ignoring the good ass politics, what other manga has just dozens of trans characters that aren't just transmen and women. mr 2. out there repping us enbies since like 2001
I've been quietly reading the manga ever since it started publishing here over 15 years ago but I'm too embarrassed to admit it to anyone
I've been reading it on and off since I was 12! Crazy it's been around so long. I haven't really watched the anime since around Ennies Lobby, but I do really like the movies. Have you watched any yet?
There's two youtubers I like that do analysis on one piece. First one is Mr Moji https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QokSqPHzZII This covers the importance of dawn and what it represents in one piece.
The other is craftsdrawf https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bD5ZRhOd0ig&t=8s This video covers justice in one piece and I really recommend.
I don't fully know where these youtubers stand politically mind you but I would say somewhere on the left. They actually inspired my to go back and read the manga. Currently am at Syrup village arc.
i wish theyd make a version of it that just merges all the episodes together into a very condensed movie. it just goes on forever.
