Edit: it's always astounds me how much the left hates itself.

What I keep getting stuck on, as I genuinely haven't looked enough in to it, is that they can already do that & will do that regardless of how 'we' respond to recent events. By way of analogy, it seems similar to the argument that a Democrat in office is better than a Republican for the labor movement because the former won't impede unionization - but it will always come in to conflict eventually, and European countries show higher rates of unionization are not in-and-of themselves good when they're abetted by the bourgeoisie.

Like, I don't think Twitter would be affected if they banned Glenn Greenwald (most popular leftist account I can think of) tomorrow; people'll complain, but they'll continue to eat at the same trough. Perhaps that's too cynical.

Yeah it'll absolutely happen no matter what but they still want to create at least something of a cohesive narrative around things, maybe it reduces the number of liberals who are actually radicalized by political crackdowns on the left? For example, they even try to get supposed socialists to become imperialist China/Venezuela/USSR/DPRK/whatever-bashers with these sort of "from-the-left" attacks on their political systems, even though socialists have almost no say in terms of foreign policy of the US right now. I think it comes from a sort of "squash it before it grows out of control" policy. It probably doesn't take much effort from them anyways. The CIA has to spend their billions on something after all.
