I don't know what we want to do with this community yet, but I'm excited to hear what you folks are thinking!

Figured I'd open up a megathread for the comm, let us know what kinds of things you'd like to see linked in these, as well as any other suggestions cause I don't have any plans and didn't mean to become a mod, pls help

Don't forget to take a look at the rules, we drafted them up pretty quick so they're very much subject to change and rough around the edges, we want a lot more community input before we nail anything down

Me for the past two decades: haha wow these neurodivergent jokes and memes sure are relatable, and I feel like I understand completely when my many, many family members talk about their struggles with ADHD, I don't want to say anything though because I don't want to downplay their disorders because I'll never truly understand what it's like I can only try to get it

Me like a month ago: O fuk I probably have had ADHD this entire time

me like a week and a half ago: O fuk I do have ADHD, dr. agreed with me

I'm at the 'O fuk I probably have had ADHD this entire time' stage

Isn't that just /r/adhdmeme . Shout out to @crime for showing me the subreddit and taking a burden I never knew I carried off my shoulders. o7

Edit: Well I guess they aren't that similar but it had the same effect on me lol.

So happy to hear that's been helpful and you've been unburdened a bit, comrade :af-heart:

I feel this so hard. I’m autistic as well as ADHD, and I didn’t even know that first thing until I was 18, so looking back I can’t help but view myself as a complex series of coping mechanisms and I don’t even know what’s for what

Do you even try to separate it for yourself? I gave up, doesn’t feel like a worthwhile distinction tbh

Same! After I started thinking about it I realized it felt a bit like ‘curing’ autism, like fuck that I don’t want to ‘cure’ who I am!

Oh god I've had this thought everyday since I was diagnosed a few years ago. Like Im pretty sure retroactively my entire personality was based on a mental illness I didn't know I had.

"Haha oh goldsound you're so easily distracted"

"Can you please stop talking/reading a book/using your phone in class?" (I eventually took to doodling in work meetings to keep my hands busy and even that was disrespectful to some)

"Can you pay attention to this conversation for just 5 minutes?"

"Goldsound, what do you mean you haven't started yet? Its due tomorrow!"

Fuck its such a weird feeling.

What are the best resources to learn about ADHD? Also, are there any leftist sources on neurodiversity?

On one hand I think it might be good to do a poll to find out the ratio of adhd to autism to whatever else (choosing more than one allowed obv).

On the other hand I can't help but think there would be something bad about doing that, but idk what.

But back on the other hand I just really wanna know because statistics are cool or some shit.

I'm both! There's a ton of overlap to the point where I don't really bother trying to differentiate which is making my brain screwy at any given moment tbh

I know what you mean, since we've never had a moment where our perception wasn't impacted by both, I can't run experiments with Independent variables and narrow my experience down to causes. I wish I could, cause that would be so fascinating, but I'll settle for just explaining and experimenting on my perception on whole

so uhhh I was diagnosed with type 2 bipolar in my 20's, almost 10 years ago... but now I've been watching those How to ADHD videos and think I might have ADHD instead/also? no wonder meds haven't been working for couple of years now lol, granted there have been months/years I have been skipping doses. don't know. probably should try to get diagnosed again.

There are many symptoms in common, it's worth asking your provider. I often find a screener helpful - for me, especially the question of do you ever find yourself getting much less sleep than usual but not really missing it? I'm not a doctor, but true manic/hypomanic sleep cycles would be unlikely to show up if you had ADHD instead of bipolar 2. (Also you probably already know, but skipping psych meds can greatly impact their effectiveness - even one that previously worked can lose its effectiveness if you get back on it after messing with your dose. Brains are weird.)

Anyway you can ask if your provider has a screener they prefer to use, and/or bring your answers and use that to start the conversation.

I’ve dealt with paranoia on and off for a while. I think it’s basically applying a social context while alone and the anxiety that comes from that. Like if you’re sitting alone and suddenly your brain decides to be aware of the second person in the room when there isn’t one it’s creepy as fuck

I'm new here, I recently found this place after seeing it mentioned on twitter, and have been lurking for a week and I think I really like it. I'm diagnosed autistic, and I'm a socialist, so I think I'll fit right in 😍😊

I'm so easily distracted that when I unlocked my apartment door and carried in lots of heavy groceries I forgot get my keys out of the door.

I forgot for almost an entire day and only noticed when I went outside to go for a walk. Sometimes I scare the shit out of myself. Glad no one broke into my place or my car.
