want to show the girl I'm seeing (yeah, that girl, but I'm working on her, ok?) a studio ghibli film. my favorite is Princess Mononoke, but I'm not sure if thats the best one to show a newbie. what would you do?

Edit: Gave her the list to pick from. She says the warrior princess one, which I'm okay with :D

I will answer this question with Porco Rosso until the day I die. This is my personal favorite movie.

Porco is my personal favorite too! I deeply love that movie. It was the first Ghibli film I watched with my spouse and she wanted to see more, so it's worked as a gateway at least once.

Spirited Away easily. Weird in a very approachable way. Very sweet, very zen while still having pretty tense stakes.

The Miyazaki Lupin III movie, as a trojan horse to get her into watching more Lupin

Kiki's delivery service is cool. I think the story is more straightforward and easy to get into.

depends on your taste. i really can't get into that one because there's just nothing for my particular brain to chew on

the top-tier for anime normies are:

Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, My Neighbor Totoro and maybe Princess Mononoke.

after that, it's a little more obscure, but they're all pretty good. but i think once you're out of the really popular ones, the subs v dubs argument becomes a lot more difficult.

if you're willing to branch out of Ghibli, Ghost in the Shell is long, but a good one to show. easy sci-fi appeal, and you can see how many later movies borrowed from it.

What's wrong with Mononoke tho? I'd show her Mononoke or Castle in the Sky because most Ghibli films are s-l-o-w. I mean, I love Kiki's Delivery Service, Totoro, Ponyo, and Spirited Away, they're great films and look absolutely beautiful, but if I start one on a lazy Saturday afternoon I usually end up falling asleep in the middle.

Princess Mononoke is very good. a really good heroes journey, for sure. Spirited Away is soo weird; i like it, but its weird if you haven't seen any anime

why in the mother of fuck has no one mentioned pom poko? obviously the best ghibli date movie. its about raccoons, fast paced, very obvious envoirmental message, gorgeous visuals, tragic but not soul shatteringly sad. perfect movie to watch cuddling up.

I think I've only seen it once, a long time ago, too. A strong contender

The Castle of Calistrogo! There's guns, a clocktower scene, a rich guy that gets the shit beat out of him, and entirely adult characters.
