i went in thinking i was gunna get an anti hero and I didn’t even feel close to that until the last scene and even them it felt like he wasn’t doing it out of empathy or care but because he wamted to be a badass cleaning the streets or whatever

With the dreamy music at the end, I came away with the thought that the ending "bad ass anti hero" scenes were all just in the protagonist's head.

It's a stark look into the lives of the average Italian man

And you just answered your own question. That's why people like it.

He is literally Joker. The movies have the exact same structure.

it's a movie about alienation and as such does not evoke many positive emotions

It's a cool thematic movie... if you don't like it in the first hour no chance you'll like the second hour of it.

i actually liked the second more because I understood the theme of it, the whole first I was like soo when he says the filth he means minorities poor people and sex workers right? later on i got the alienation piece alot better

You should still watch Synecdoche, New York tho

A fantastic movie about gender being constructed by societal ritual and I think colonialism, I haven't seen it in a while, but it definitely helped me understand that I had some pretty incorrect views on gender when I watched it in highschool.

What about movies with bummer endings? And cringe comedy. I'm not trying to be judgemental, just curious, I didn't really like horror movies for a long time for basically the same reason

One of my favorite movies. I didn’t like it on the first watch either. It’s a really tough watch the first time because of his social awkwardness and his lens of the world as a taxi driver.

To me, he is a villain who descended into madness because of societal alienation.
