You're all so close to understanding social fascism and it's really painful to see. I doubt Greenwald has any understanding of it, but he does understand that Carlson, AOC, himself, Trump, etc. all seek to preserve the dictatorship of the bourgeoisie and that the neoliberal order is not a viable means of doing so. The methods which they seek to employ to retain bourgeois control vary, but they all fall into the category of reformers who seek to prevent the inevitable collapse of their nation states due to the heightening contradiction of capitalism rather than allow for that collapse to spur internationalist, anti-imperialist, proletarian revolution.
The reason people like AOC and Greenwald (used) to be likeable is because they co-opted ideas and language from the communist movement, but not the platform. Greenwald probably believes the endless wars are unhealthy for bourgeois American society in the same way binge drinking in your twenties is unhealthy, but the occasional drink is fine. This is the same reason he is transphobic, because he recognizes the rapid breakdown of cisnormity is bad for capitalist society (whether or not he consciously realizes this, and the fact that the long term breakdown of cisnormity can be co-opted by capitalism is irrelevant). He sees the possibility of what many call the "red-brown alliance" and his broadly defined socialism because he recognizes the browns want to preserve American hegemony and some of the "reds" would be okay with it as long as they got healthcare or whatever. This tendency is reactionary and extremely dangerous to the communist position and must be combated. Anyone who would call themselves socialist but not communist and anti-imperialist should be immediately suspect.
Lol find me one time Greenwald ever co-opted language from the communist movement. Outside of the stroke of luck Snowden reached out to Greenwald and his reporting in Brazil - dudes politics have always been right-leaning libertarian trash.
Edit: Also yeah, weird conflation of a first term social democrat house member who actively supports unions and a weirdo online guy who carries water for fascists on Fox News. People who think AOC "Isn't likable" (likability is a very lib trait to care about in an elected official) are too-online goobers who got caught up in that clear FTV op.

Maybe "communist movement" is a little too generous, but my point is that he attacks the most blatant overreaches of American imperialism abroad and at home because to some degree he recognizes they are a threat to the empire and he cloaks that in anti-imperialist and free speech language, both traditionally the positions of communists in the US. Here he attacks US-Saudi relationship, Here he says a 'new domestic war on terror is coming', No Matter the Liberal Metric Chosen, the Bush/Cheney Administration Was Far Worse Than Trump. Obviously his politics are libertarian garbage, but American libertarianism emerged as an attempt to reconcile the settler colonial state with an anti-war bend co-opted from the actual anti-imperialists of the 60s and 70s and Greenwald is no different in that respect.
The reason I bring up AOC (it's her second term btw) is because Greenwald specifically mentions her in his list of "socialists" and he is not wrong. My whole point is that "socialism" in the imperial core is a reactionary tendency from the Leninist perspective and AOC has been happy to walk the imperialist line just as Greenwald would be if it didn't involve what he considers gross overreaches of the empire. They both are fundamentally opposed to a dictatorship of the proletariat and recognize reforms will be needed to prevent that from emerging. That is what Greenwald means by "socialism" whether he would put it in those terms or not.
Interesting, i know that Greenwald ignored Snowden for months until other journalists started getting the scoop, but I'm not aware of what his politics were before that.
