I can't remember exactly what the situation was, but basically Kony wasn't really a problem anymore and this provided support for deployment of US troops to Uganda/DRC.
They didn't want another Sankara I'm guessing. There had been internal discussions about sending troops since 2010, but Kony gave them the political capital to do it without backlash.
