Millions of people cant take care of their 5-11 yr old kids and work a job at the same time. Schools are vital part of our society/socialization of children.

Schools function as a public day care that provides a lunch. Already poor families can't buy 5 (x how ever many kids they have) extra lunches a week + a baby sitter or have 1 quit their job to take care of the kids during the day.
