I don't even understand the conflict. I know people are fighting but who and why?

Edit: Thanks for the links everyone, and I'm sorry I asked.

I'm assuming US intelligence doesn't like lukashenko, so some on the left are very wary of an astroturfing of an actual people's movement, especially on reddit

Edit: probably should have responded to op

Lukashenko is a nationalist dictator, but he rose to power because he was the only deputy to the Belarussian parliament who voted against dissolving the Soviet Union, and opposed privatization and neoliberalism in the 90s. While in power, he's revived and preserved a lot of Soviet institutions, and undertaken some impressive poverty reduction initiatives.

This doesn't mean he isn't shitty in other ways, of course- he's a massive homophobe and misogynist. He's denied the deadliness of Corona and said that tractors and vodka would help cure it. He's unpopular now because he massively fucked that up.

Some idiots refuse to look at states like china or recently Lebanon and Belarus critically because theyre supposed to support them against western imperialism but the reason their governments get overthrwon is because theyre fucking bad. And it just makes it worse when the poeple in power like Lukashenko is so power hungry they just cant let people even have elections leading to these situations where imperialists get a change to worm in and at the worst case you can look at happened to ussr

It's not that simple. Here's a private CIA contractor gleefully discussing the possibility of Belarus joining NATO and encircling Russia. This is extremely dangerous and makes the breakout of a war with Russia more likely.

Lukashenko is shitty in a number of ways, but he came to power because he opposed privatization and neoliberalism. He's conducted successful anti-poverty measures that reduced poverty from nearly fifty percent to less than six percent. Belarus weathered the post-Soviet collapse better than the other ex-USSR states because of him.

Cool why does he have to rig elections to keep himself in power and beat protesters

Because he fucked up covid. And there's a ton of corruption in Belarus that he presides over, as there is in every post-soviet country. This shit is complicated, and your snooty takes aren't really enlightening anything.

This is a bad take, especially because you can oppose the actions of a government without saying that, hey, a CIA-backed coup is preferable in place of that. Because that's what we're saying with Belarus right now.

I mean even if a government is good, rigging the election or not accepting getting voted out should probably not get you support, right?

Yeah but what makes shit so fucked is when you look at the 3rd world movements (Indonesia, middle east, african and south american states) which got fucked by torture and genocide i can see why some people see it hard to give any kind of credit to populist movements tryung to change their governments
