I've followed this quite bit on twitter and the ones that tend to defend China say that the intention of the CPC was to crack down on kpop celebrity culture, which they view as unhealthy as it idolizes a sort of fake materialism.
Apparently the term translates poorly, but is also questionable and insensitive in Chinese and the party is being called out for being out of touch boomers for not finding a more PC way to say it.
Just to reiterate, I'm not trying to run cover for them. Obviously China has lots of conservatives even if it does have a nascent LGBTQ rights community, but this the perspective that iirc people like Carl Zha and Xiangyue have given on the topic. I don't know Chinese so I'm just going by second hand.
