He was a French art nouveau designer. Studied under Eugene Grasset, who also did the same kind of pattern book with plants. That's where the movement really shined in my opinion. It was the art of biology.

edit: Also a broad spectrum designer. The patterns in those books are for everything from wallpaper to ceramics to wrought iron. They really tried to extract every natural form from the specimen.
