Despite what others are saying in the other thread i think we do need to grow because we barely have any devs, if we had more people, more people would volunteer to be devs, so yes, evangelize more

But when a forum grows, it tends to attract bad faith actors

lol this site at launch had a bunch of feds spamming videos of child soldiers with john kerry’s head photoshopped on them.

if anything, more people here dilutes the dudes coming back here for their paycheck

Is there a list of open issues or roadmap or anything that prospective devs could glance at? I might be interested in a side project.

"The proposal is to fork Lemmy again, this time deliberately not diverging too far from upstream so it’s easier to maintain the patches and apply them on top of each new Lemmy release.

This is a large undertaking. There is no timeline, but we expect it to be a while before the site is migrated over to the finished fork.

We’re still in the early stages, but the more people involved the sooner we can progress. Primarily, we need developers (Rust & TypeScript)"

how about just not fork at all lmao. Why do you need to have features that you don't contribute back to Lemmy? And if there aren't enough devs to do the work, what's the point?

The only reason we'd actually fork again would be because upstream Lemmy wouldn't want some of our features. For example, they have been resistant to the idea of sitemods.

It doesn't seem like people are resistant, just trying to think of the best way to implement something.

So in 3/2021 we halted registration, was that the vegan struggle session or something else? You can see a drop off in active users after that, since the active users will trail by two weeks. The amount of active users never got as high again. Beginning of May 2021 you see a spike in active users but that follows a period of low or no registrations.

The amount of active users never got as high again

I think this was probably the time I stopped doing advertising in /r/therightcantmeme. The site registration being shut down meant that me throwing the Hexbear ads up there was literally pointless and people not being able to register on a site I was telling people to go register on was making me look silly.

This caused me to then slow up on doing TRCM sticky posts, then stop, as one of the primary reasons I was doing them was to drive users here.

It never recovered because I moved on from doing it and my primary focus became setting up greenandpleasant for the future and making sure it was wrecker-proof.

wreckers have this cute pattern, especially at the beginning of the site, where they’d cycle through topics trying to melt everyone down

this worked a couple times, the most successful being over veganism. they made alts of both vegans and nonvegans, got normal users to bite on :both-sides:, and posted racist shit “as a vegan” from new accounts named shit like “AnCap” or “JustAskingQuestions”

this was comboed with the last attempt this site made to bring over another large reddit sub. every time the mods tried to do this, a struggle session would miraculously appear. Our long-suffering jannies finally realized this was a bad idea and stopped doing lifeboat comms after this.

This vegan strug sesh caused a whole meltdown to the point were obvious trolls were doing digital blackface as POC, which then stressed out and understandably pissed off actual POC comrades. Many of these POC comrades were vegan, many were not. The fact that wreckers managed to get the struggle session to “are you vegan or are you against racism” was fucked up and also impressive.

Most of the mod and dev team apparently reached their “fuck it” point and left. Mods turned off new account registration for two weeks and mostly disappeared. This sucked because I got banned for being a shithead and had to lurk for at least a week lol

subreddit https://www.reddit.com/r/vegancirclejerk was invited here because they feared they would get banned, position of some users that came from vcj was that non vegan leftism is not leftism at all and they were loud about it, also some other users, due to the uncompromising position on veganism of those from vcj, accused them of racism against indigenous cultures, and so the struggle sessions went, i avoided reading them because i dont like drama so i dont know more details

Preachy weirdos were ignoring all historical and material reality to post about how "hypocritical" it is for Westerners to not think eating dogs is the same as eating cows.

They made /c/food unusable for about a week by just posting pictures of dogs and titling it "yum" and when people got sick of it they called people rapists and the whole site went on meltdown. They also got accused of orientalism and being ignorant of indigenous practices.

            Basically liberal idealist wreckers tbh.

Outcome: Several users were banned or otherwise left the site, /c/food was wiped and compromise was that meat-posts are tagged as such and get NSFW filter.

My view is, we should do a push for some more crowd funding, then start doing some targeted advertising on the social media giants. It’s relatively cheap, we’re not selling things so we’ll have a passable conversion rate, and it’ll pay for itself in the long run.

The site becoming regularly becoming permanently inaccessible without knowing to clear your browser cookies is probably one of the big factors slowing growth. It's like random mass permabans for everyone except the people that know and care enough to purge their browsers (which is a pain).

Can not even lurk, the site just becomes a blank page with no instructions permanently unless you clear your cookies. It's not a CloudFlare probl either.

Idk when the last time this happened but it happened a lot in the winter.

Right? There were like three legit ones that got a sincere response and caused good changes to the site (shout out to brooke and TC69 for bullying the cishets :trans-heart:)

so that was of course followed by a fucking mudslide of :stupidpol: ”this site is unwelcoming and unsafe to me as a rodesian brony with PatSoc tendencies. I demand to have ‘brony’ added to the slur filter or the admins are ableist”

                Such. Good. Slop.
