Behold your precious country, where we mock our great genocides with the tossing of an egg.

THE SINS OF THIS NATION SHALL ONLY BE and so on and so on

I, John Brown, am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land shall never be purged away but with blood.

Yeah I'll fucking say it again too.

You got the spirit of the thing right, I don't think he was the sort to care too much about semantics as long as you were willing to do... you know the thing.

My elementary school had a similarly extremely racist mascot until one day in the mid 2000s, a parent made a comment to the principal. It was changed by the start of school the next morning, and the district superintendent issued a public statement via mail to everyone in the area apologizing and stating they "hadn't actually thought about it."

The town is 97% white. Shook that the honkies didn't make a stink about it at the time.

You know, some times I feel a bit down about how us commies were demonized in the red scare - especially in the 50s and 60s.

Then I remember how easily provable it is that white folks were just so incredibly racist, sexist, and bigoted at that time. Just the worst people you can imagine. And no, they can't use the excuse of "well it was normal for the time". Look at that mascot and say an okay person would come up with that. Look at Chief Wahoo (or don't it's hella offensive). Look at how they talked about and portrayed native Americans at that time. Such garbage people who never really got what they deserved.

And keep in mind that logo was still in use up until a few years ago.

Atlanta Braves fans to this day do the "Tomahawk Chop" (again, CW for racism if you look it up) which strikes me as just as bad.

This whole time I just assumed it was the state of Washington.

And good fuck, now they’re the “commanders” with theme song “hail the commanders”, that’s pretty on-the-nose

Cleveland did this too, going from Indians to Guardians.

Not sure how many teams named after the racialized other are left, but I’m looking forward to one getting renamed the Conquistadors

The Washington team had to be federally ordered to desegregate in 1961. They were the last desegregated sports team in America. Yes the team with the slur as the name refused to hire any non-white players.
