    He was supposedly the inspiration for General Ripper in Dr. Strangelove, a movie which in hindsight looks like a very gentle parody

      It looks like a glowing comedy if anything. The shit that went on in the late 50s and early 60s is fucking in-sane. It's a miracle we survived without a nuclear war. God knows this bastard and his friends tried many many times to start it. Literally stating they wanted to start it first, despite by this time already knowing the soviets were way way weaker and only concerned with defending themselves.

        Ya, in some respects real life was weirder than the film. Edward Teller, for instance, who's at least part of thr Dr. Strangelove character, wanted to develop a bomb big enough that you didn't have to drop it out of a plane or put it in a missile, you just detonate in your own country and it kills people on the other side of the world as well as your own people. This is a serious respected scientist, the guy who invented the hydrogen bomb. Absolutely nuts.
