On this day in 1978, one of the first strikes of the British "Winter of Discontent" began when 15,000 Ford workers, mostly from the Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU), began an unofficial strike.
The Winter of Discontent took place during 1978-79 in the United Kingdom, characterized by widespread strikes from both private and public sector trade unions. Some of these industrial disputes caused great public inconvenience, exacerbated by the coldest winter in 16 years in which severe storms isolated many remote areas of the country.
On September 22nd, 1978, one of the first strikes of the "Winter of Discontent" began when 15,000 Ford workers, mostly from the Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU), began an unofficial strike.
The number of participants later grew to 57,000. As the months progressed, workers from multiple industries went on strike, including lorry drivers, garbage collectors, and gravediggers. It was the largest UK labor stoppage since 1926.
The Winter was a disaster for the incumbent Labour Party. The magazine Socialist Worker quoted one council worker as saying "We had to strike because Labour betrayed us".
The Labour Party was swept out of power in the 1979 election, leading to the premiership of Margaret Thatcher.

someone at like disney or whatever should go to john carpenter and give him one hundred million dollars to do whatever he wants, as an apology for everyone fucking him over so much in his prime

they live, in the mouth of madness, big trouble in little china, and escape from new york are his best outside of those 2 imo, but just about everything he did pre-escape from la is amazing

i mentioned that, it's one of my favorites of his? it's not the scariest film ever, but it's a really effective thriller

kind of? it's about a horror author (very clearly based on stephen king, his name is sutter cane, he sets all his stories in a small town in new england, the font on his book covers is the stephen king font) who goes missing, and a private eye is hired to investigate. weird stuff starts to happens that's definitely lovecraft adjacent, all about sanity and seeing things man was not meant to know.
it's part of his apocalypse trilogy, along with the thing and prince of darkness. not an actual trilogy, just 3 movies about apocalyptic events that all have a little bit of lovecraft in the dna. (the thing is based on a short story that was obviously riffing on at the mountains of madness)

it's one of his better movies for sure. also be sure to check out some of his non-horror stuff as well, since he wsn't just a horror guy. the other 3 i mentioned are all great action movies
He's responsible for so many hits and cult hits too. I love him because he's a blue collar film maker, the last of the hollywood left as Zizek put it in Pervert's Guide To Ideology.
he rules!
I don't get it didn't Kurt Russell and Rowdy Roddy Piper have the same haircut as those dudes?
kurt russell in escape from new york originated that hair i think. they live rowdy roddy piper isn't exaclty the same, his hair looks more like he just hasn't gotten a haircut in a while. but mostly i just appreciated him calling reagen a wrinkled old piece of shit who fucked up everything.
:gigachad:
And then he uses that money to make another Halloween III: Season of the Witch :troll:
if he makes another movie i will watch it in theaters regardless of how bad the reviews are
iirc even the original director of the Thing made fun of Carpenter's 1982 movie :deeper-sadness:
death penalty
Escape from Earth

no, the first time he got a serious budget was the thing, which got 5 million more than e.t. (the must successful film of the year) did the same year. indiana jones only had 20 million, and was the most successful film of the year before. at the time the most expensive movie ever made was superman, with 50 million dollars, but that was a massive outlier and wouldn't be topped til rambo 3 in 1988, with 58 million. 15 million went a long way back then!
