Besides the usual nepotism and "he is in the treats so put him in more treats" treatbrain mentality and a bit of MCU capeshit associations, why was Chris Pratt chosen to do the voice?
i think it goes like this. in ye olde days you could just create a movie star, right? at some point someone can have a drunk bet and create a box office hit out of steven seagal. and then milk them for half a dozen movies straight. nowadays there are no real movie stars. everything is down to viral marketing, inertia, and milking old IPs. this isn't really a serious project, there's zero chance anybody really believes in The Mario Movie because if they did they wouldn't have hired illumination to make it. so you gotta do the laziest thing and put a former MCU actor in the lead role. this is a direct to VHS movie with way too much money to burn.
except we ain't fishing for oscars we are fishing for facebook aunties. i hereby lathe one of the mario characters behaves like a minion.

i don't even know what is it that they have to do to appeal to the moviegoer demographic. hell it could be that nobody knows this divine truth just yet. the market seems unhinged. but you know how it is. you go to a meeting with studio execs. nintendo sent the guy who's responsible for issuing DMCAs to watch. you can't just say 'so there's this guy called prozd he's on tiktok and he's really funny we should hire him'. they'll send you to the mcgulags for that.
The worst part is that Chris Pratt is not even trying to sound like Mario, like ffs at least have fun with the role idk
