I know someone's likely to do the "power dynamics" meme or do a :reddit-logo: knee-jerk "it isn't illegal therefore there's nothing wrong with it" reaction, but I'll say it anyway: the fact that creepy aging men had a culturally normalized expectation to take advantage of people less than half their age back in the day is a dire reminder that it could be culturally normalized again, even moreso than now. :libertarian-alert:

In a non-capitalist society it would make even less sense. Seeing as how men might not feel insecure with women of their age, or the same caliber as them.

The older I get, and having had two children and a 13 year old adopted sister. I couldn't imagine dating a 19 year old, it just feels alien...

More people need to listen to this cumtown clip. There will always be bottom tier men unfuckable by the standards of any woman their age. That's not capitalism's fault.

If you can call me morality police I can call dating people less than half someone's age potentially creepy, especially as a normalized desired outcome.

but there is a line between acknowledging exploitation and imposing one’s own arbitrary values on others

That's a pretty common :libertarian-approaching: talking point when they go (as they often do) to age of consent discussions. :fry:

EDIT: Apparently adding a few years to a legal boundary gives instant and eternal immunity from subjective scrutiny to anyone of any age after that, no matter how far the age gap.

Power dynamics can be easily addressed with cybernetic augmentation, so you can download wisdom to make up for the gap in years, and command respect from your partner with the laser cannon grafted to your sternum

I have not read the book but looked up the passage out of curiousity. The character is referring to the last time he saw her, which was more than ten years previous; she is 29 when mentioned. So married at 30-something and 19, or before. She is introduced with a description of her breasts, so not to disagree that the author is a strange 70s polish pervert. But it doesn't seem to be exactly as you say.

In Crime and Punishment, iirc, the main character kills an old woman. That was so mean and really I don't think people aughta do that. I stopped reading after that. Killing old ladies is wrong in any context and this obsession the author has with it is really revealing

I think a big part of it is that those creepy nerds are terrified of someone with enough life experience to talk back and to assert herself instead of being a piece of clay to shape according to the nerd's desires. :kombucha-disgust:

I won't defend the author because I know nothing about them personally. As far as personal experience goes, I'm AMAB identify as a man, my partner is +31 years on me :shrug-outta-hecks:

Sitting back and watching round three of the power dynamics “is it ok for a 19 year old to date a 28 year old?” struggle session

At least 19 y/o with a 28 y/o had a shred of ambiguity, the 19y/o with a 48y/o and this one are borderline :libertarian-approaching: shit

Did the book ever mention Kelvin's age?

I only remember it saying Harey would have been 29 when the story took place.

There's a fuckiglng gulf between being a prude and being suspicious that a 19 year old is involved with a 30 year old. Yes. Your friends are DEFINITELY manipulated.
