I'm assuming this whole endeavour depended heavily on money being essentially free for another decade or two, which sounds stupid in hindsight, but, to be fair, it also sounded stupid at the time.

People will just turn to web scrapers and those will cost Twitter way more than API access

Price the API at $44,000/month so you only need 1 million people to buy it and boom, $44B recouped
This is where the tier starts? Insane. I've had apis for proprietary data that fortune 100 companies used to actually get customers, and that made like a few million. And this 500k a year for like research? Ridiculous.
