The Murdock entertainment conglomerate has been poisoning "entitlement" for a good while. Fox's "entitled welfare queens" shtick has been going on since Clinton was in office.

Huh. Maybe I just didn't notice that until after Mass Effect 3. I was old enough to have been around and paying attention during :billdawg: too. :blob-no-thoughts:

Before then I remember a lot of "welfare queen" talk for sure, but not with the "stop being so entitled" angle.

Maybe I'm conflating two different media pushes. I do remember Fox calling Americans entitled when Obama was in office, and it got picked up in general -- "you young kids are so entitled these days" kinda stuff

I suppose I was lucky enough to be not watching Fox and being, at the time, far enough away from the chuds that were around when I was a kid while going through college.

That was the main reason I was so disappointed; up until then, the games were pretty good at both acknowledging decisions (within :LIB: limitations, such as a compulsory alliance and servitude to a private human supremacist space nazi paramilitary organization financed by :porky-happy: ) and making the cast of characters matter and have significance beyond the ego insert main character.

i think the assertion that the internet video game reviewer prompted a sea-change in the popular meaning of a word needs a bit more defence than this

i dont have the time to go digging through william buckley jr's backlog but it beggars disbelief that conservatives wouldn't think to slander the word being used for social programs they've been pissed off about since the 30s until the gamer man told them to

I'm not going to try to prove it in a laboratory environment. Even proving "PC Master Race" as a concept not really showing up until Yahtzee said it once in a video would be nearly impossible that way.

All I can say is that I didn't see "entitled" being used that way, anywhere, until after the anti-backlash backlash.

"Entitlement" being derided as a concept is one thing, but "entitled" being a shorthand adjective for "ungrateful poor that is getting uppity" is a relatively new use case.

Before that it was :freedom-and-democracy: "welfare queen" talk.

I stopped playing after the first one because I thought the "Evil AI decide to destroy all humans for no reason" plot was cliched beyond justification and I was pissed that the story made me kill Wrex for some convoluted bullshit "hard choices" reason that caught me completely off guard. Like bruh I would have cheerfully railgunned the little mengele frog dudes from orbit so my buddy could have kids what the actual fuck why did you make a game with like three different Great Replacement plots?

Karpashyn rarely writes anything else. Even in the Old Republic Star Wars MMO his contribution, several times over, was... that. He's still not a hack like Mac Walters though. Fuck that guy.

I just don't have any patience for it. There's a whole side-quest where an AI on the moon wakes up, realizes that it will be murdered for hte crime of existing, then kills some people and steals a bunch of money in the process of smuggling itself off Luna to try to hide out somewhere and I was just like "Well yeah, seems reasonable considering" but fascist space supercop Shepard was supposed to give a shit or something.

People get mad at me sometimes and are like "But they ret-con it later!" and I'm like "Bro I gave the story like 70 hours and the last 30 was just perverse curiosity to see if they'd do anything intersting. I gave them a fair shake I don't care what happened in the sequels".

I could have been wrong about that, then.

My personal experience involved not hearing "entitled" used in a "stop being so entitled" way until post Mass Effect 3. Maybe it was simply sheer chance that I didn't.

Yahtzee was mostly okay and became more okay over time compared to the rest of The Escapist, but that was still a bad call on his part.

But like I just had to look up the phrase “Rush Limbaugh Entitlement” on google to get a whole list of insane arguments rooted specifically in trying to attack some notion of a “culture of entitlement”.

Did :frothingfash: call those uppity poors "entitled" as a summary adjective back then?

Maybe they did. I genuinely don't know.

Huh. I was alive back then, but where I was with the people I grew up around, the key words were racial slurs, "low life," or "welfare queens."

Maybe I just had a peculiar and specific variety of chud environment that didn't hear "entitled" as a :frothingfash: adjective until much later.

:freeze-gamer: only picked up what was already there and ran with it and boosted its signal, then.

:capitalist-laugh: bad thing is in game

:wall-talk: talk about bad thing in game

:wojak-nooo: "Stop being so entitled! If you don't like (microtransactions/loot boxes/battle passes/no accessibility options), you can leave!" :bootlicker:
