I don't think the average person realizes how inhospitable mars is. Even nuclear hellworld Earth is probably less hostile to human life.

I am sympathetic to the idea of not putting all of our eggs in one basket (Earth), but if we are on the brink of nuclear war then sending a few people to Mars in the 2020s is not going to save us. Space colonization is a civilizational goal that will take centuries to be self-reliant and sustainable.
