HBO Max announced Wednesday it plans to re-adapt the Harry Potter books. The series will run for 10 years on the streaming service.

"Max's commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me," author J.K. Rowling said in a statement. "I'm looking forward to being part of this new adaptation, which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long-form television series."

Max did not confirm a start state. They will begin casting new actors for the roles.

Rowling wrote seven Harry Potter books. The books were first adapted into films from 2001-2011.

The final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was split into two parts. Still, the film adaptations, over 2 hours each, had to consolidate some of the subplots from the books.

Max said each season of the series will adapt one of the books and promises to "be authentic to the original books."

Warner Bros. also produced three Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them prequel films. A Harry Potter reunion special also streamed on HBO Max.

    :ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh:

edit: Well, if it's any consolation, this will almost certainly go straight into the cultural garbage disposal like 99% of streaming content.

it's honestly astonishing those bombed so hard and yet it didn't kill the franchise. like yes obviously they were objectively trash, but name recognition for the (once) best selling children's fantasy series of all time should be able to beat that. did they just conclude "okay, we can still do this if we play the hits"?

Each book is a year no?

So if they do a season a year it should work perfectly

This is what's going to replace Marvel.

Ya ready for a young Dumbledore standalone that's worse than BBC's Sherlock? Cus that's what's coming.

i can't wait for the subplot where Harry becomes a verified account on Owler.net but he has to deal with being harassed by a cabal of mudblood rights activists called The Awoken Ones or something.

saw this take earlier on here that Rowling is doing this to groom some child actors that are okay with her TERF shit and won't denounce her monstrous views when they grow up

    • Awoo [she/her]

Won't just be the child actors. The adult actors that will sign up to this will be doing so fully knowing her views and current behaviour.

I bet more than half of the child actors will eventually come out as not transphobic unless they live isolated in a secret cruise ship or something

Rowling isn't doing this for money she's doing it for influence.

The actors that get cast for this will all be actors that are A-OK with what Rowling does and says. She's essentially going to be using the franchise to create an influencer-pool of terfs.

Nah I'm pretty sure this is just another instance of "HEY REMEMBER THE THING???" just like the LotR show, the Mario movie, every fucking Disney remake and so on

Just do it as a cartoon. The logistics of doing it Live Action are just beyond stupid.

Make it look like the art from the uk editions.

        For season 1.

Every season will have have a huge budget cut as the money won’t make more people subscribe or cancel.

Plus not having teen actors go off the rails over the course of much longer tv shoots compared to film. I doubt that if the show makes it to season 10 the main trio of kids will be the same actors.

Plus the fact that there isn’t much in the books that really matters to the characters or overall story. In anime terms, Harry Potter has a lot of filler arcs.

The movies would probably have been much shorter if all 7 books were published by the time the first book released.

But it’s all about the kids. It’s a horrible idea.

I hope the show falls apart because someone has a trans pride patch and JK goes batshit.

Man imagine being put in charge of making this. Like, what creative decisions can you even make? WB’s not gonna let you change the look of anything because of the theme parks that print money.

Who is this for? Is this just because Disney’s making a Percy Jackson series? Thing is the popular culture hasn’t turned against Percy Jackson and also it never got a good adaptation.

Ten year commitment seems strange... HP is solidly a millennial franchise, it's only maybe a little popular with genZ but it's definitely old people shit for anyone younger.

I can't imagine the ratings for this will hold up over 10 years.

I don't think this is for younger people. This is for the remaining die-hard fans who have their walls coated in Ravenclaw banners and have a marauder's map tattoo. It's for people who named their kid Draco.

It's for the weird lady you may know from work who has a wand on her desk and goes to Universal Studios every year. It's just more juice in the tank to sell even more plastic stuff to people who already bought out all the Order of the Phoenix funkopops but could absolutely get greased into buying more from the new HBO series.

HP is also weirdly popular among some older Gen X types who mainly watched the movies with their kids. A few of my relatives and coworkers fit that profile. People in their 50s with Pottermore accounts who were already 28 years old when the first movie came out. Horrifying.

I would only be okay with this if I were placed entirely in control. Because I know fuck all about Harry Potter besides the first 3 movies and it would be hilarious. Trying to stretch a 2 hour movie I barely remember and didnt really care for into a season on hour long prestige TV sounds like a dream.

If I could make movies, Verhoeven's satires would be my jumping off point. I've wanted to do 1984 but as a post facto documentary about Insoc's struggle against revisionism durometer wartime. Literally everyone would think I'm doing a pro Orwell starship troopers thing but in a Verhoeven double twist the irony is I'm being totally sincere and the satire is on Orwell.

There’s a decent amount of detail left out of the movies that it would be possible to adapt the books into a series. The movies alone were 19 hours long. 19 hour long episodes would already make a sizable season.

The real wild controversy marketing is polyjuice potion. Donwe get an episode with catgirl in a school uniform? Do we have a person change gender with the potion?

If the plot actually was about Dumbledore being a transphobic chud making deals with wizard nazis under pretense of "protecting" women's sports, that might actually be interesting.
