My buddy and I are having our first movie riffing night in many months and need some suggestions for a film to laugh at and/or thrash mercilessly. Hoping for something free to watch online or on Hulu. We've previously enjoy the hilarious lib-brain fantasy of JFK and the groping/harassment level nostalgia for useless boomers in The Trial of the Chicago Seven (should I report Sorkin tried to touch me in a bad place?). Can you help us??

Battlefield Earth is John Travolta's Scientology movie. It's unspeakably bad. It has a 2.5 rating at Imdb. And it's bad in just the right way. It's an hilarious big budget flop. That's my favorite so-bad-it's good movie.

    Battlefield Earth (2000)

It's the year 3000 A.D., and the Earth is lost to the alien race of Psychlos. Humanity is enslaved by these gold-thirsty tyrants, who are unaware that their 'man-animals' are about to ignite the rebellion of a lifetime.

If you and your friend do a Dutch angles drinking game - you'll get alcohol poisoning. Wikipedia...

Almost every shot in the film is at a Dutch angle, because, according to Roger Christian, he wanted the film to look like a comic book.

The entire movie is a disaster. It's kind of incredible. Nothing is good. In scene after scene - you'll be asking "What were they thinking?"

Exactly what I thought when I saw this. Didn't know is was a scientology op haha that makes it more hilarious. If I buddy hasn't seen this, I'm gonna suggest it or Assassin: 33AD so far.

I'm serious about the drinking game. Dutch angles - don't do it. Unfortunately - I can't think of a drinking game that's non-toxic. Maybe each time they say "man animal".

Ninja edit: "Man animal" is probably no good either. You don't want to do ~10+ shots. If not ~20.

It was honestly pretty painful. Loved the screaming goats. But even that seems like a cheap plea for love in a sea of unforgivable chum.

Waterworld is a three-hour journey into "what if Mad Max, but wet?" and a pretty good peek at what Florida will look like in 20 years

God's Not Dead 1, 2, and 4 are great for this (3 is too dreary imo). Oh! Have you seen Assassin: 33 AD? That shit's fascinating!

Oh yeah! Assassin: 33AD sounds hilarious! What's the God's Not Dead series?

It’s hard to find the Original Assassin 33 AD. It’s been replaced with a recut that’s less Islamophobic, less suspenceful and with lots of cut-away explanations.

It's slop for evangelicals to fantasize about owning evil atheist professors and lawyers in debate and thereby defending One Nation Under God. 4 represents a pivot from culture war stuff to promoting Christian nationalism more properly. The first one particularly I've watched like 4 or 5 times and shown to about a dozen people because it's such a lovely encapsulation of the evangelical ethos (with homophobia toned down but the racism very present).

I would recommend one or both of the following:

    • Birddemic (Shock and Terror)

    • Fateful Findings (or literally anything by Neil Breen)

If you want to drunk on a film then look no further.

I've been doing this with the various not so good Indian blockbusters on Netflix with friends. The best is Singham, absolutely bonkers, manic copaganda for the Mumbai police dept and very fun

Do yourself a favor and don't look up any of the famous scenes on YouTube. You want to experience the tonal whiplash of the fight scenes fresh

The other night my lady and I watched In the Mouth of Madness . Sam Neil in what I think is one of John Carpenters best movies.

We ended up going with God is Not Dead. Honestly low hanging fruit. But it had some good laughs with Kevin Sorbo and Dean Cain in there. Initially I have three possibilities for Sorbo: 1: he's really Christian in that "liberal Hollywood doesn't like me. Look at my big Christ Penis" way. 2: He did this cause he's a lib, a non-believer, but he thinks people having their beliefs is "nice." 3: He thought this whole piece of trash as hilarious. Now I must discover the true Sorbo.

it's cheesy and doesn't take itself seriously, it goes in the exact same bin as the marine in my mind

I just think there's a world of difference between a movie you can laugh at and a movie you can laugh with. you can't make fun of Army of Darkness because everything that's fun about it is intentional

i think you are probably taking my definition of shitty too seriously. i'm talking about movies you sit and bark at with your friends and army of darkness is in that category for me

yeah that's fair, it just stood out to me because you listed a very good movie alongside a bunch of actual shitty movies lol. tho Streets of Fire also slaps

if we're really getting into it, i would include spider-man, blade, highlander and the first fast and furious as actually good movies as well. they just so happen to also be goofy and dumb
