She already has a healthy dislike for capitalism, but doesn't quite understand why I consistently shit on the US, or blow off anti-Russian and sinophobic propaganda.

Though I know she'd appreciate the content of Blackshirts and Reds, I also know she'll never read it. Whenever the opportunity rises, I'm going to have her listen to Blowback with me.

But what are some easily digestible videos I can share with her? What are your favorite Second Thought videos? Preferably things that are easy to comprehend, and less than an hour long. Stuff I can easily watch with her, to give her context about China, Russia, the USSR, and in general the US's role as a global oppressor?

Thinking I might show her the BoyBoy haircut vid next.

I.e. they have an episode that's about "whataboutism" and how it's usage didn't originate with the USSR (despite years of the media saying its a spooky kgb tactic) but actually with the troubles in Ireland where the British would accuse the Irish of "whataboutery" when they bring up British imperialist crimes. Sound familiar??

For "softcore socialism" I really like the 2017 talk Richard Wolff did at Google. It starts off a bit slow, but by about 8 minutes in he is at his best, explaining baby's first socialism with full confidence to an audience of laypeople (when it comes to politics/economics). I think it's much easier to start here and go as deep as you can on economic issues, before talking about how similar relationships and power structures are mirrored internationally in the global economy.

The most well-tuned lib-to-left pipeline I've encountered is probably the Upstream podcast.

It's a well-produced podcast with gentle-sounding music breaks etc where the hosts all speak in the polite did-you-know register of an NPR whisper voice podcast.

I can't say much good about the hosts, except that despite their general lib vibe they'll bring in Breht from RevLeft Radio and let him open up the tank gun on their listeners about Stalin and Mao, they'll bring :matt: on to discuss the British enclosures, they'll have Alyson Escalate on to discuss Trans liberation and Marxist feminism.

And to their credit the lib hosts work to sanitize these views, make the stuff seem palatable by being like "see I'm a normal polite lib-left like you and I don't feel the need to push back on these narratives, I think they have value".

I wouldn't recommend it to anyone here, I only listen to it because my partner does and I want to know what sicko thoughts are being implanted in her head.

insist that she just read the first chapter - the knowledge of the material context of WW2 is one of the most valuable things you can have

I might be able to just read it to her. She just doesn't have time in her daily life for podcasts or books, and it's easier to spend time together watching some concise video where I can help her with additional context and info; that's why I'm looking for Second Thought highlights.

The thumbnails alone tell me it isn't gonna work for her.

      ...but that doesn't mean I can't peruse :very-smart:
