I agree that they're too strict on immigration, but I'm not sure it's the best solution to prevent a population collapse. You're just brain-draining other countries, and eventually the rest of the world's population will stabilize and you won't have any more people left to bring in. It would help for several decades though.
Protecting them from capitalism?? You ever been to Japan? It's one of the most company/brand/product centric places in the world and you can tell at a glance.
And in this one case the xenophobia adds additional barriers to the work force preventing capitalism from decreasing labor power as much as they would like.
