As a kid I started reading comics in italian that I already knew in english/french. The key is choosing well translated, but simple works once you have a basic grasp of the language. Comics like Asterix or Tintin have excellent italian translations, so once you have a basic grasp start reading them and try associating words with the pictures, and then working up to some more complex stuff. I think the visual/word connotation helped me learn a lot. A more complicated adult comic that's excellent is Corto Maltese. Anyway, those aren't really reccomendations for books about learning Italian, just some comics that I think help grasp sentence composition and structure until you can work up to more novel level stuff and eventually understand people talking to you. The key is to go at your own pace.
