I think that on a subconscious level Americans actively want to suffer under the yoke of capitalism bc of a combination of protestantism (damn you Jean Calvin) and the knowledge that the prosperity of American society is literally and figuratively built on an Indian burial ground. The genocide of the natives haunts and will haunt the psyche of this nation and the people living here until the end of the earth.

The notion of suffering giving meaning to existence is absolutely related to protestantism and you're 100% that it has given almost all Americans brain worms. If you haven't already you should read the Protestant work ethic and the spirit of capitalism by max Weber. He's a lib in general but it's a short book and he viciously dunks on the stupidity of the exact bourgeois mindset we're talking about

If we Americans wont get class consciousness, then maybe the balkanized remains will.

Class consciousness is not spontaneous, we all knew that. Cultural struggle is the key.
