The old sub had ~150K users and (this part may be a surprise) there's a podcast with the same name that's pretty successful on Patreon. Note also that fucking with online communities is so easy it's almost trivial -- you don't actually need to go out and do anything, all you have to do is shitpost from some windowless room in northern Virginia. Compare that to all the real-world work various law enforcement agencies did to fuck with the Black Panthers, who had a membership of about 5,000.

What they're getting at is that while the Black Panthers were way more impactful (understatement, but it's hard not to understate) it's also way easier to fuck with us than the black panthers. So the time investment:total fuckery ratio might still be low enough that they're willing to do it.
