My dad does this kind of thing as a rhetorical defense so you can't use it in an argument with him. He claims to be libertarian, yet isn't. Just so you can't use republican policy against his arguments.
Claims to not watch fox News so when he brings up some talking point obviously from fox News he can deny it.

My conservative grandfather (the Christian kind that hates Trump but tolerates him) goes with the take that it was a mistake but with the evidence we had it seemed like the right thing to do
