        Uighur camps

Pragmatic and relatively humane approach to counterterrorism, at least compared to alternatives.

        Mass censorship

See how Glastnost turned out for the USSR? See how, after colour revolutions, life has gotten qualitatively worse? That’s why.

        drug penalties

Mostly a cultural hold over from the opium wars.

so when trump snatched people off the streets months ago and we were all pissed and etc, it was a pragmatic and relatively humane approach to counter terrorism?

so the censorship is cool and justified because its some other countries fault?

and harsh death penalties is cool because a ancient opium war?

im just saying like if this was a thing here, which some of it is, and is getting worse which we always hate on, why is that cool and a justification for things that literally we accept no justification for here

Re-education is a process of raising their skill sets so they can work better jobs and thus improve their material conditions. This then results in the dropping of the extreme ideology because they actually have good lives to live.

There is absolutely no death-penalty involved in the RE EDUCATION of a small number of the at-risk population there. You are horribly informed, I can only assume you've gotten your information from reddit comment sections in liberal communities and never taken any time to verify it among socialist spaces, even /r/socialism, a radlib/socdem space, will take you to task on how badly informed you are .

Get informed. It's incredibly embarrassing that even the libs over there are better informed that you are.

That was not even enough time to glance over what was sent to you, let alone enough time to watch or engage with it.

If you won't actually take ANY time to learn what we have all taken the time to learn then you are a reactionary. Pure and simple. Either take the time to get properly informed and learn or get out of leftist spaces because you're not a leftist. We don't take positions and then endlessly defend them without actually doing the homework, do the homework, then we'll talk further. Stop being such a massive child. Take the 20-30minutes you need to actually learn the leftist side of this topic.

Very sincerely, when I look at world politics, it's China that gives me hope for the future. The US is fucked, which is as good as it is bad. China's coming out of ever crisis stronger internally and on the world stage, pushing America to the sidelines, weakening the imperial power.

I mean it was only like a week ago that Bolivia defeated their coup. Arce should be taking office soon. In a couple days we will inevitably see millions of people cry over a person who hates them losing. Regardless of who wins. And it's going to be hilarious. Socialism in America is more popular than it has been in decades.
Progress is slow. Nothing is guaranteed. The odds are stacked against us, but don't forget the victories too quickly.

The current level of disenchantment with electoralism in America makes me happy. I've come to terms with the fact that life in America will get hellish soon, but the good thing is that a hellish life in the imperial core means less imperialism abroad and a chance after 100 years for socialism to develop unobstructed by imperialists.

I'll take that trade in a heartbeat if it means saving the future and possibly having a world to live in after the smoke clears.

The thing that helped me get out of my last depressive episode was the realisation that being a doomer is unmaterialist. For a lot of us, Sanders and Corbyn represented the first time that we felt hopeful about the future. That they both lost was a pretty big blow and a lot of people are still coming to terms with it. We've all been grieving for a lost future. However, it's important to recognise that Sanders and Corbyn didn't create the movements that brought them close to power and no one predicted their emergence beforehand. They were just avatars of the frustrations of normal people, and particularly of young people. None of the conditions that created the movements around them have gone away and, in fact, coronavirus has just made them worse. That should give us hope, because the left are the only ones who have any solutions to them. The right are actively making them worse and are incredibly unpopular with anyone who isn't a boomer and liberals' solution is to pretend that it's 1997 and hope that no one notices that it isn't.

There are multi-billion dollar industries whose main purpose is to convince people that things can never change, so it's inevitable that we're all going to feel like doomers from time to time. Yet, over the last 10 years everyone I know has become radicalised and the socialist promising 'revolution' won like 90% of the youth vote in the US, while Corbyn won every demographic of working age. The future will no doubt be hard in many ways and things are getting worse, but that doesn't mean that they won't ever be better. Capitalists will always present crises of capitalism as the literal end of the world, because for them it will be. But we shouldn't fall for it. A communist world will always have to deal with the crises that capitalism leaves behind.

Watch this BRG video it always helps me when I’m feeling depressed: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rw0uK7C77oU

Here are a couple things I can say myself: going doomer is a win for the reaction, as we will never be able to realize a sustainable and better world if we give up before we’ve even given it a shot. Also, view your hardships as a test of your resillience and strength. Just like the revolutionaries of the past didn’t, for the sake of peace and freedom, don’t give in.

Editing to add in more suggestions: Work out, meditate, log off, change your diet/eat better, read nice books, cultivate hobbies, find something productive that you’re good at and enjoy it, focus on getting better at work/studies. These are all things that make me feel better.

Basically every doomer take is "things will get worse next year" + "here's the worst things can get in that direction" therefore we're about to hit the magical tipping point where we skip everything in between those two points. The magic tipping point doesn't come from material analysis, but rather from people consuming too much media about war and apocalypses, so their easily available mental models are those, rather than Jim Crow, the Dust Bowl, The Troubles, etc. Maybe things get worse and keep getting worse, but they don't suddenly jump off the hook just because you don't feel like thinking about the space between Bad and Maximally Bad.

All of our problems have well-understood solutions. More and more people are getting on board with the fact that socialism is prerequisite to those solutions. We have a variety of historic methods to build socialist movements, and new ones are being developed. The only thing between us and a better world is a mountain of work, and although there's a lot of it, none of the steps are hard, and most of them involve getting other people to start helping.

The cost of deploying enough shitty and highly expensive CO2 scrubbers to reach net emissions is only ten percent of global GDP. The only challenge is a lack of political will which will increasingly erode as things worsen.

The doomer narrative is certainly promoted to shore up eco fascism and to stop people demanding change.

You'll have to jump on Google scholar for the source, sorry.

I haven't watched the video but did try to read some of his arguments and he seems borderline ecofascist from what I read. Obviously negative emissions technology does exist, even if it's harnessing natural processes otherwise Earth would look like Venus. On the ecofascist claim (apologies for the fucked PDF text:

Meanwhile, in an Indian village where my offset money has helped to fund a wind turbine, the villagers now have the (low-carbon) electricity to watch television, which provides advertisers of a petrol-fuelled moped with more viewers, and customers. A fuel depot follows, to meet the new demand, and encourages others to invest in old trucks to transport goods between villages. Within 30 years, the village and surroundings have new roads and many more petrol-fuelled mopeds, cars and trucks. Meanwhile, the emissions from my original flight are still having a warming impact, and will do for another 100 years or so.

That's a very big claim. In the lecture I posted he said the West should learn from the Global South in how to live fulfilling, less carbon intensive lives. Hardly something a fascist would say. A fascist would advocate killing certain ethnic groups.

I'm optimistic. I think the democrats are going to win. With their unprecedented power, a true mandate to make progressive changes without republican support, they will either do so, or not. Remember Bidens platform does include a Healthcare public option, a green jobs program, raising minimum wage, etc. It's not obvious that they will fail. But if they do win, but still fail to deliver, they will suffer losses in the primaries the likes of which have never been seen. 2022 and 2024 primaries will be our October revolution.

Tl;Dr I think we are about to finally break the cycle of the two parties sharing power and giving each other excuses for bad governing.
