In general, most people want some sort of background checks/certification for gun owners. I don't really know or care about a ban on assault weapons or high-capacity magazines, personally. Honestly, with the improvements in 3D printing and online shipping in general, I don't see how that could even be done. But, I would like to know that my coked out neighbor can't just walk into Walmart tomorrow, buy a gun, and shoot me in the face because I have a IYG license plate. What's the solution? I don't know. I know that checks and permits and classes and stuff are a barrier to gun ownership for lower SES individuals or possibly for those with mental illness. If the USA was able to enforce the laws we already have in a fair matter (aka don't shoot a black guy with a gun and wave to a white guy with a gun), then it would be different.
I admit, I originally started out as one of those libs who thought we should just make the guns go away. I've read and learned since then, and obviously don't think that's gonna work out very well. It doesn't mean I don't have at least a small bit of panic every time someone open carries into my workplace to order food however. I know it's their 'right', but it makes me twitchy. Is this a good guy, or is this one gonna shoot me cuz I forgot his sauce or we put lettuce on his food or because I asked him to wear a mask indoors...? So seriously, i don't know what the solution is. I don't even know if there is one. I do know that Biden's bullshit is a cheap dollar store bandaid however. It'll fall off within 10 minutes.
One simple improvement to licensure, courses, etc, is to make it free.
Gun safety should be taught in high school universally, as a graduation requirement, for free, and adults should be able to take a course at the local school, also for free.
The LTC should require a (free) gun safety test, and should be free to apply for. Maybe a cost to replace if you need to do it before expiration, but renewals should also be (you guessed it) free.
I feel like the "free, mandatory gun safety" should have universal appeal.
With legal gun ownership, it is conceivable that literally anyone in the country could encounter a firearm at some point, regardless of how they feel about them. Anyone in that situation should know how to safely handle the firearm, ergo, mandatory universal gun safety education.
There are a lot of things that should be mandatory/universal that aren't, though. Like....why isn't literally everyone taught basic first aid?
like sure, of course even, but what does this have to do with guns? As a mentally ill person I find it so condescending that people want to bar my access to weapons over it.
Because mentally sound people don't shoot up schools. I have a mental illness too, I'm not saying we should ban mentally ill people from guns. I am saying we should prioritize mental health within our communities to prevent gun violence from happening.
I think most of these shooters are fascists, and kill people cause of that, not their mental illness which is used as a scapegoat so society doesn't need to confront anything except fucking over mentally ill people

Gun safety isn't the only thing. Mental health awareness needs to be a bigger factor in this country.
