I just started listening to them to learn more about Abbie Hoffman from someone who isn't Sorkin. Not being dry af when talking about history and leftist politics helps a lot I think, and his co-host is pretty damn funny and they do some great improv. Listening to the John Brown one now
Just be ready for the emotional gut-punch at the end with the Dangerfield Newby letter. First time I think a podcast has ever made me cry.
Just finished it, yeah that was sad. I'm sure there were so many cases like that throughout the country, lives and families just completely wasted to suffering.
Can confirm. Listened since day 1. I was always a leftie, but this truly radicalised me. No joke, every single one is deeply chaotic and indicative of ideology. Either money, racism, sex, power or just idiosyncrasies.
Gareth's a fucking comedic genius, Dave is my political guru. Please listen! I can give personalised recommendations but Reagan two parter, The Rube, and Ten Cent Beer Night are great entry points.
The one about Uber manages to be very funny while presenting an absolute avalanche of evidence of how evil Uber and the people behind it are.
Being from a Quaker family I loved the Quakers vs Puritans one.
The Co-Op Wars one is a hilarious microcosm of leftist history too.
Do you want funny, sports, politics, expeditions, or soul crushing leftist destruction?
Here's a few fun ones:
-
CIA LSD reserch on dolphins it's both fucked and hilarious
-
Henry Ford's favourite henchman it's a live episode and Matt is on it
-
They examine the day the Klan came to South Bend, Indiana. it's a whole bunch of KKK getting beaten the fuck up
-
1908 New York to Paris car race this is a movie waiting to be made
But they made “the great race”? It’s a silly comedy, but fits the tone I feel :)
-
Episodes 27 and 45 are shorter than normal and good, episode 323, 1908 car race from new york to paris the long way, episode 104, about the time they thought about introducing hippos into america (and much more), episode 150, about the 1904 olympics, episode 12, about a very....interesting baseball player
Episode 12 - The Rube or Episode 15 - Ten Cent Beer Night are my funny recommendations for people normally. Both start out about baseball, but are definitely not really about baseball.
Some lesser referenced ones...
The one about Uber manages to be very funny while presenting an absolute avalanche of evidence of how evil Uber and the people behind it are.

The Co-Op Wars one is a hilarious microcosm of leftist history too.
I recommend any of their live shows. They play off the audience really well and I feel it works better than their studio sessions.
I've tried listening to the Trump episode but didn't find it funny. Maybe other are better...
REAGAN REAGAN REAGAN!!! Easily the funniest/most mainstream insane one they've done???
I was just looking through their episode list and, holy shit, they have an episode on the Deaf President Now protests. I thought that completely went into the memory hole for all hearing people who haven't specifically studied American Deaf culture.
Did they have problems with plagiarism before or am I thinking of another podcast?
I don't think it was plagiarism, it was some people wanting Dave to cite his sources to give credit to the people whose work he was using.
Yeah, this has been a broader issue in podcasting generally. They sorted it though.
