I read Dune right after reading ASOIAF and was blown away by the writing quality. The classics are the classics for a reason. Also the love scenes - GRRM write porn, Frank Herbert writes love.

Book one is amazing and highly recommended. Book two is still great, but it's a long tome of people lying to each other so you have no idea what's going on until the very end. Book three doesn't have the same brilliance, IMO, but it's worth reading. I'm told book four is the hardest to get through and most polarizing, so I haven't attempted it.

Random - I listened to an audio book of Dune where the love interest Chani's name was pronounced exactly like Dick Cheney's last name. Fucking assault on the ears.

That's actually my favourite (either that one or book five), though I can see how it could be polarizing. I suggest giving it a try.
