I think underestimating the hell that could be unleashed from the conservative persecution industrial complex is a very naïve thing to do. It's never worked out well in the long run. Not saying that their "suffering" is valid, but I've always found the argument that these people are just harmless cry babies and sore losers to be an uncomfortable one to sit with.
Organise progressive organisations, make demands that the majority of the people agree with, and isolate the right-wing in that process.
