Consoles were so expensive that's the reason why. But the home console ports of the arcade titles were literally arcade boards inside cartridges and were perfect 1:1 conversions.

I have this raspberry pi 4 and an extra 22” monitor laying around, that was my original plan for a cabinet but I like the idea of finding a console now. Probably not cheap, I’ll end up paying back what I stole in quarters I’m sure

There is a surprising amount of aftermarket parts available for both. Soon I’ll be making my Gameboy with a USB-C port and a rechargeable cellphone battery with a backlit screen

I'm going with original NES since it revolutionized games. If handhelds count though I'd say Gameboy. I love N64 but the first run of 64 bit games haven't aged as well.

Fully agree. I know we had to have a growing pains period when 3D was just barely technically possible but I didn't like the look of 3D at the time and I don't think they've aged well, either. Doesn't affect the story or gameplay, mercifully.
Yeah definitely growing pains. They didn't quite have the camera angles figured out and a lot of game designers were trying to make their 2D philosophy fit in 3D which didn't always work out. The biggest difference is when they figured out dual analog controls, which was practically impossible on N64. Playing Goldeneye after games like Halo dropped was nearly impossible because of the difference in controls.
That said, some games hold up really well like Mario 64 and both Zelda games, though they're not without their camera issues.
