A lot of this is a left over from Steve Jobs which becomes a form of in group signaling, but it feels dated like someone reading Sun Tzu for business. It’s like someone read the textbook of what the in group says it does vs what they currently do now. Not having things because you choose to verses not having them because you can’t afford to is a very different situation.

This feels different as someone in tech bro hell. This feels to me like people striving to be sophisticated. Like they are trying to not be a tech guy by being the opposite. This is them caring about fashion and art and minimalism in a healthy way has been a trend for a long time now since it lets you sidestep comparing yachts for those who can’t afford them with those who can.

The people who are the ones trying to be “real tech guys” are the people who obsess over gimmicks, edc, config files, customizing their computers and commodity hardware spec sheets.
