This is eventually all going to get compiled into one megathread for people who want gaming recommendations from Chapos specifically. Other consoles and genres will come in sporadic subsequent threads. Please contribute to previous threads if you missed them. This is meant to be an exhaustive list.
Expanding on your choice(s) is definitely a plus. Not everyone knows about or has played non-mainstream titles.
Hello, we are back folks. I think this is the longest gap I've taken on this series.
I liked that mechanic personally, makes it feel more like something's at stake when you die
And it was pretty forgiving, you didn't have to kill any big enemies to get your life back, and it would be waiting for you outside of boss chambers
The only times I didn't like it were when it spawned inside the boss's chamber, so if you want to get your geo back but can't/don't feel like beating the boss you have to go all the way back to Dirtmouth and give a rotten egg to that npc.
All the Metroids
Wario Land 3/4
Cave Story
Ori
A ton of others I probably forgot.
For the namesake of the genre I'll throw out Metroid Prime which is my favourite in the Metroid series. More recent titles in the genre that I've really enjoyed are Guacamelee and Hollow Knight, which both has beautiful artsyles and great gameplay
I have been meaning to play Guacamelee since Dunkey made that video about it. Looks pretty fun.
Does metroid prime count as a metroidvania?
That was easily one of the best video games ever created, period. Amazing graphics for the time, the isolation and worldbuilding through passive history was incredible
Dark Soul's and it's sequels are probably the best 3D Castlevania games ever made.
the tech magic the engineers worked for those games to get extra colors in the cart is actually quite interesting
Heard it didn't sell well though but at least it's a classic now. Thank god for eshop and emulation, wouldn't be able to play it otherwise.
Hollow Knight is one of the best games I've ever played and it was made by THREE PEOPLE
Environmental Station Alpha for sure. Made by the guy who did Baba is You, it has charming graphics, a lot of secrets and the best 2D hook I have seen in a game.
I don't know if this counts but Jedi: Fallen Order was really enjoyable to me. I think it counts as a Metroidvania. It definitely lifts aspects from the design philosophy.
If you've ever wanted to play Dark Souls but Dark Souls is too hard then this game is probably a good start. One of my favourite things about the game is the combat. Apart from one skill at the end of the skill tree, there is absolutely no way to increase your lightsaber damage. You have to learn how to hit enemies rather than upgrade your weapon to do more damage to them. It's probably the best lightsaber combat since the Jedi Knight series. There's a great sense of progression where enemies that would have once kicked your ass are easily dispatched once you learn how to kill them, but if you're not paying attention you can still get killed easily by them, especially on the higher difficulties.
To give an example of the combat there are repeating blaster troopers early on that could kick your ass if you don't pay attention. All you can do in the early game is maybe reflect their first shot back at their shield and deflect all the others, you then have to run up to them and whack them the moment their gun overheats. Later on, when your character improves, you can now reflect their entire volley straight back into them with a well-timed block.
The game also rewards your exploration with lore nuggets, cosmetics, and XP.
Oh, and the planets are really pretty.
I really liked Another Metroid 2 Remake (AM2R), it actually feels like the best 2d Metroid, lots of cool bosses, massively improves the originals design and some genuinely surprising moments. Its hard to find now but the subreddit tends to know where the most recent version is.
I finally played that like two months ago and it's insane how good it is. Definitely the best 2D metroid and way better than Samus Returns on the 3DS
I have a love affair with Ori and the Blind Forest, although most Castlevania games are tight past Symphony of the Night.
SotN should be taken as a landmark game that set the stage for this genre.
I think landonray's hardtype mod elevates it to GOAT material
I had played through vanilla twice before but, but hardtype made me feel like I had missed most of the game's content or at least couldn't appreciate it properly
vanilla's numbers are just far too forgiving towards alucard, and you can comfortably facetank and spam normal attacks through almost the entirety of the game
the rebalanced difficulty really pushes the player to engage more with the game, use items, cast spells, do special moves, actually dodge enemy attacks, etc., because the much harder fights encourage you to explore all the game has to offer for an advantage
I really liked vanilla too but this blew my socks off
