A friend of mine's mom grew up in soviet Ukraine. I have a thing for soviet watches so I asked her about a specific one. Turns out, her and her friends would sell a couple types of these watches for fun to tourists because it was the cool thing to do. She was never starving or in dire need, she just ripped off tourists because it was the cool thing to do.
