It already does compete with air travel handily on plenty of these routes, but there are some really super cheap flights around the EU and HSR is still basically run like a profit driven business that has to recoup its significant capital costs (building the system). Flying can often be cheaper even if the time you take to travel is roughly the same or even comes out in favor of the train.

I totally get where you're coming from but to be pedantic, the problem with the EU isn't that it's unelected or supranational, but instead that it's a liberal bourgeois institution. As communists we shouldn't have any respect for liberal nation states or "democracy" which is usually how we see these anti-EU arguments get presented by right wing populists.

  • I would honestly be more anxious about the idea of still having to be concerned about programmers being employed in a capitalist economy 20 years down the line. And even if it did happen that way, at that point you're probably talking about the majority of post-industrial bullshit jobs being automated away, so programmers would be in the same boat as more or less everyone else outside of maybe like caregivers and tradespeople (many of whom would also end up being replaced).

  • STEMbrain inclines people toward thinking that social problems are optimization problems that could be solved if only leaders came to their senses and just tweaked and implemented the right policy, and techbros are also basically in the perfect material and intellectual position to internalize the homo economicus models that underlie econ 101 and its application to the housing market.

  • If you like Chinese or Indian influenced stuff check out these channels and choose something that catches your eye; I find they're super easy to follow along as long as you have the ingredients / spices: https://www.youtube.com/@YEUNGMANCOOKING https://www.youtube.com/@RainbowPlantLife

This tofu tikka masala became probably my favourite dish after I made it the first time: https://youtu.be/u-KO1LIdKdE

  • Honestly the security guards at the grocery stores I've been at have mostly seemed like just people doing the absolute minimal to watch the front of the store and monitor and deescalate for any actual violence or harassment (unfortunately usually from homeless and other very hard done by people with mental illnesses). My experience was that loss prevention who watched the security cameras from their offices and stalked and chased after people were the real villains. I guess these roles may overlap depending on the store though.

  • Going to the gym is probably both the least emotionally difficult while also actually effective ways to fight chronic depression. Inceldom generally comes part and parcel with depression, insecurity, and self loathing (relating to contradictory feelings of both superiority and inferiority).

Basically I think lifting weights is a relatively simple, non-ambiguous way to progress at something and feel better which isn't really true of the emotionally difficult methods of self-improvement (therapy, meeting, talking and learning about new people). It's also easier and more socially acceptable for men to build up cultures related to gym and exercise tips than whatever comparable therapy or empathy cultures you could imagine.

And obviously it doesn't fix mental illness or make someone a good person, but again, exercise and achieving fitness goals legitimately are some of the best methods for fighting chronic depression, even if they aren't substitutes for emotional growth! It's not really surprising that people in those situations get hooked on it, at the same time as on the more toxic body dismorhic and fatphobic sides of gym culture.
